R6 Tail and YZF Tank question

Post by cell »

So I am almost competely finished converting my FZR to the new tail and tank swap. I have one question though. I am a little uncertain of cutting up my airbox and sealing it with duct tape ( Call me crazy!!). Does anyone know if you can use the stock YZF600R Airbox? I'm assuming it should fit, well because it is made for that particular gas tank, but will it line up with the carbs? If not, is there another way of getting around this? Obviously I could go the individual filter route, but the bike runs so well right now I didn't want to jump into jetting it and retuning it. Any help would be very appreciated!

I don't know about the yzf air box. I've never heard of anyone using one before though. I wouldn't want to duct tape it either. I personally went with pods, but I understand why you wouldn't want to. Anyway I would either fiberglass the hole, but properly roughening the plastic and drilling holes for the fiberglass to stick to. You could also try geting some flat plastic cut to fit the hole and using plastex or similar or plastic welding.

I went with the pods as well. I remember someone saying over at the archives a year ago that it would not fit and he had to end up chopping it to fit.

If you want a TEMPORARY solution(I did this for a few days when I got my new motor running on a stage 1 kit), I covered parts of the pod filters with a plastic bag and tape to limit the airflow. This is the ultimate ghetto "tune" but I just wanted to take the bike for a spin cuz I hadn't ridden it in a year plus I had just gotten it back together. Anyway I was extremely surprised how well the bike ran using this method, very very streetable. (it wouldn't rev past 4k w/o the bag)

Ok well if I wanted to use the pod filters, I'd need to jet it? Any recommendations? The bike only has a d&d slip-on with 33k miles on her. As far as tuning, is it something I could do myself? Is the use of a power commander required, or just helps?

Yes you will need a jet kit. I used a factory pro stage 3 jet kit. You can do it by yourself definatly, but its pretty time consuming. When I was tuning mine, I had my carbs off and on prolly 20 times. Read into it first before you take the leap for pods. As for the flo-commander, it is NOT necessary but will make the process a whole lot easier and it has other benefits aswell. I did it without the flo-commander but its not 100% yet. onebadfzr600 has a few Flo-commanders for sale for a VERY good price, so jump on that if u can.

Ok, well thank you for the help. I think I'll just be cutting it up, I have some fiberglass leftover from repairing my plastics, so I will probably use that to seal it up. I wanna get this thing back on the road!

Just go pods and stage 3 jet kit. You will be happy.

The YZF750 tank I have (for sale) fits over the FZR400 airbox that I had. Odd that the 600 tanks don't fit.

Looks like it fits the same way as the YZF600 tank does
