synching my carbs...
made a cheap manometer and i'm synching my carbs for my cold air setup. 1 and 2 were pretty far off but 3 and 4 were so far off it instantly sucked the oil into cylinder 4
. hopefully i'll get it dialed in soon and hopefully it helps my dead spot.

With your intake design, I'm not surprised that 3 and 4 are pulling much harder. I think you might be well served by having a larger volume "airbox" since with a smaller volume, you get a higher air velocity and the caustic effects of uneven pressure distribution are more pronounced. The larger volume will effectively dampen the impact by giving the pressure waves a larger reservoir to sink their energy into.
Now that I think about it, a better, and arguably meaner looking solution would be to separate the manifold for cylinders 1 and 2 from 3 and 4. You would then get a filter on either side (might interfere with your suicide shifter though, hmm). I think the firing order is 1, 4, 2, 3 so that means the 1-2 and 3-4 are always 180 degrees out of phase. That would give the maximum amount of time between pulses and result in the smoothest air flow you could get without a seriously engineered solution. I'll have to remember to ask my friend how you determine the optimal airbox volume. I know it's a function cylinder displacement and targeting a particular RPM, which would be where the meat of power band is, optimally.
Yay for ghetto engineering!

Re: synching my carbs...
Oh, and which home made manometer design did you go with? I'm still looking for a reasonably priced 6mm adapter so I can do mine.
Re: synching my carbs...
yes i thought about seperate filters but it wouldn't be possible with my shifter. and that's good insight. there is a lot of engineering that goes into things as simple as an airbox. and the manometer is just a yardstick($.50) 15' of 1/8 id tubing ($.29) and two 6mm zerks($1.56 a piece). i got it all at lowes except the yardstick. the grease fittings were two pieces and with a couple pair of vice grips i unscrewed the two pieces and the spring and ball popped out. screwed them back together and i was done.

I had great success using mig welding tips from lowes or homedepot as recommended by other board members. Cheap and you get like 10 of them. If you have a pair of glass bottles laying around, Id go with that style manometer as you don't have the risk of sucking water into your cylinders.

Welding tips eh? I'll have to look for those when I go on Saturday. The Home Despot by me is in the ghetto though. They employ the most worthless pieces of shit who go out of their way to avoid helping any one and they don't restock anything. I suspect a lot of stuff walks out the door and hence their computer system doesn't realize they're out of it. Most of it probably leaves by way of their employees too. God I hate that place.
Re: synching my carbs...
well i synched them up perfectly... and my idle has improved a lot but i still have the dead spot... i'm going to try duct taping part of my filter and see if it improves. and also try without the filter to see if i'm rich or lean... i hate carburetors...
Re: synching my carbs...
oh boy did duct tap ever help... i covered maybe 60% of the filter material and it ran like a raped ape. i didn't go on the interstate but i couldn't detect any flat spots... this means i can jet higher!

You need to get some vid clips. I want to hear how it sounds. I imagine it's pretty gnarly.

can do I'll try to get some good vids tonight.
