regulator or do i have a dirty stator?
I have a 91 FZR and my bike is about 600 miles shy of the big 40k. So i'm assuming that I have a dirty stator. But I've heard that the regulators used on the Fizzer aren't really the best out there because they get hot easily w/o enough cooling fins. And with the tail conversion i just did, it's too hard for me to get to the battery to check the output of the stator with a voltmeter, so, i thought i'd ask first by typing a quick paragraph, rather than pull my bike apart trying to figure it out. This is my only means of transportation with my current engine swap project with my car going on, so i can't really afford this problem to get worse and 1) regulator starts blowing bulbs or 2) the stator stops charging the battery. Now that I think about it, i am on my 4th battery this year (3 were used...so....)
My headlight is fairly dim at idle but gets brighter when i roll on the throttle. I know my stator probably has dirty brushes, and could use a good cleaning, but the problem could also be in the regulator that might be crapping out.
Anyone had this problem and fixed it, so i know exactly what to change?
I'm leaning more toward the stator, but i thought i'd ask anyway to be sure.
Thanks a lot guys...

sorry to say you have to get to the battery. with the engine running it should show 13.4 volts there abouts, 12 Volts and you are not charging, higher than 13.4 you are drying out the battery by boiling it.
I looked at your build but did not spot what VR you have .
If it is a heavy metal casting with fins then look to your connections being dirty
If it is a thin metal sheet box it is the old type and is renowned for being cr*p
there are quite a number of how-to's on this subject (mine included)

Re: regulator or do i have a dirty stator?
The stator is brushless. There is no way any manner of filth could impede it's functioning. There's no way for any gunk to get in there anyway so if you take the cover off, it's most likely still pristine. The stators do fail occasionally but it's like a 10:1 ratio between stator failure and VR failure.
Re: regulator or do i have a dirty stator?
This isn't a case of a bad stator. As Luke said, it's brush less and also sealed. If there's a failure on that area of the bike it's more than likely the pick up coil, which if it were in your case then you bike would have issues firing up. Given the year you bike is, I'd say it's your VR for sure. That little thing can cause havoc to your electrical system if it goes bad. A good way to check is if the bike is on and running, put a volt meter on the battery and bring the RPM's up to about 3k. The reading should be hovering somewhere between 13 and 15 volts (before my VR upgrade I was getting damn near 25 volts). Anything higher will denote that the VR isn't working. You would be really taking your bike apart to do this upgrade either. Took me 20 minutes to do everything when I did mine. We have a how to in our WIKI on how to do the swap as well.
Hope that helps.

Re: regulator or do i have a dirty stator?
I had a similar problem a year ago with my 400 (1wg). My battery was blowing out. I was charging it and there it goes again. It was dead in a day. I change the stator and nothing. I change the voltage regulator and nothing again. Finnaly it was one of my fuses. And actually not the fuse itself. It was the mounting of the fusebox. It was old and dirty and there was bad circuit. So my electrician change my fusebox and that was all. I never had problem again.

Re: regulator or do i have a dirty stator?
Poopy or used batteries will cause this also. I just got a new $80 Yuasa YuMicron, which should last another 6 years. The current one lasted that long. A very strong battery. Some places charge upwards of $85 for it, but in my opinion, WELL WORTH IT.

I've only had to put it on a battery tender during each winter for a couple hours, usually in January. That's it.

You need a new VR. The same thing happened to mine.
Re: regulator or do i have a dirty stator?
I also have a problem with my regulator and am in the process of replacing it. Only problem is, the last 3 regulators I've gotten haven't fit my bike.

Re: regulator or do i have a dirty stator?
you know what sucks, when i started this thread i didn't subscribe to it, and i was just outside and figured out that my regulator was bad and then searched fzronline for the r6 regulator conversion details only to find MY OWN THREAD that i started! i had no idea anyone had responded..it got too hot and fused the plug to the regulator. I couldn't tell that they were fused until i forcibly removed the plug and saw molten plastic around the pins. This sucks, my bike semi worked before, but now that the plug is off I can't cruise with that girl tomorrow unless i can rig it.
how do i make my profile to where it automatically subscribes to a thread when i reply/post?
and more importantly, what year r6 regulator do i need?

as far as i know it should AUTOMATICALLY send notifications to your e-mail address every time someone replies. You can also check in the "User Control Panel" under "Manage Subscriptions".
I just get in the habit of checking my e-mail account every day if there's something really important I wonder if anyone has replied to yet.
From what I've seen around here, I believe any year R6 Voltage Regulator will work. You can also check in the WIKI for more information and in the ELECTRICAL section.

Re: regulator or do i have a dirty stator?
i'm trying to call a friend that i keep getting parts from, he's the one i got my tail from and some other stuff. I think he steals bikes or at least knows people that do, and my other friend that went to school with him said he's in the mafia..
, i doubt that..but either way he knows people to get parts from. I practically destroyed the plug earlier when i was trying to take it off before i knew the VR had melted the plug. I got the bike working again, but i still need a VR, my RPM gauge, neutral light, turn sigs, and brake light stopped working. I thought it was the relay, because i was looking at the wiring diagram and it seems like it should be the problem since all of those things run through the relay, but that checks out ok. I think the VR may be causing those to stop working, but these are problems that occurred at two different times, the dim headlight at idle has been an issue since i restored the bike, and the other things happened when i was playing with the horn.

Re: regulator or do i have a dirty stator?
First off, just go to the button at the top of the page that says view your posts. To answer your second question, if you have a 5-pin regulator like myself, you will need a 2000 YZF600 regulator. I got an R6 ('06) regulator and it had 6 pins.match417 wrote:

Re: regulator or do i have a dirty stator?
I currently have the crap 4 pin regulator, i checked my bulbs the other day, most of them have blown, except the gauge lights, headlight and tail light, my brake light, neutral light, and all turn sigs have all blown. i'm pretty sure the one i'm getting has 5 pins(2002 yzf600); pos, neg, and the 3 wires from the stator. dude, my regulator is warped and the paint is sticky, that thing was fried..
. The thing still must be halfway working because the other bulbs haven't blown. 3 of the pins on it were clean, one was burnt and gray/black.
