Battery question.

Here is a stupid question. But it came up at midnight last night so I didn't have time to search for an answer.

I just bought a new maintance free battery for the bike. I got one for a YZF600 because of the under tray I'm using. I got all of the electronics pluged in (except for the fuel pump) and everything hooked up. Pulled the fuse, hooked the battery up, and reinstalled the fuse just to be safe. Double checked all of the connections, turned the key, and nothing.

Now I read the directions for the battery just for the hell of it, and it says to remove the saftey strip, fill with electrolite, and charge for 3 hours. But this is a maintance free battery. So I know I don't have to put electrolite in it (it didn't even come with any), but do I need to charge it first? First time with a battery like this for a bike. Cars don't usually require charging first so I'm a little confused.

I would guess you have to charge it.

is it a gel cel?

you sure it has the electrolyte water in it ? If not you could be charging a toaster.

If the charger is humming away then it's charging. Hooking up the charger to a dry battery is like turning the charger on without being hooked up to anything. A dry battery will have infinite resistance between the poles.

Na, didn't blow the fuse. Although I might as well check just to be sure.

I called the store I bought it from to ask them. The person on the phone was less than helpful, but he did say I probably need to charge it. We'll try that and see what happens. If it blows the battery, I don't care as it has a life time warrenty. The bad part is how long it will take to get a replacement.

Here is another question. If I hook up the pigtails for the battery tender/charger, as long as I remove the main fuse before plugging it in, I shouldn't need to disconnect everything, right? Or should I go ahead and disconect the main wires?

I charge mine with out disconnecting anything. I'll even leave the charger on if I'm going to be doing an extended amount of cranking, though that's not so great for the charger. You shouldn't have any problems as long as you don't hook up the charger backwards or something.

Word of thumb, whenever you buy a new battery, charge it on 2amp until its fully charged. Because as soon as you hit the starter it takes a big chunk to crank it on the very first time and you dont want that. Batteries sit on a shelf until purchased and I have not bought a battery yet that was new and fully charged. Put a multimeter on it and you should get about 13.2 volts fully charged. But that may vary to.

Well, I feel like an idiot. Got to looking at everything for a thrid time. The main fuse was blown. So I put the spare in and ten seconds later it blew. I didn't even turn the key on. Started looking at everything. Noticed something that didn't seam correct, so I took a closer look at it. I had the positive and negative on the VR backwords. Switched them around, put another new fuse in and turned the key. Everything works. I can know case down and miss wired items. I'll have to put the battery on a charger before I try cranking it, but for now things work.
