I've found that very lightly aplpying white lithium grease to the boots on the airbox grealy increases the ease of installation. You also get the added benifit of helping to preserve the rubber from drying out. I tried this yesterday and was amazed at how easily it went on.

yeah I use dielectric sometimes if I dont have any lithium or 'cam lube' engine safe grease around

Problem is, the grease will slowly 'rot' the rubber over time. A smear of Vaseline will do the same thing, but won't harm the rubbery bits it comes into contact with.

the best thing to use would actually be either a teflon or silicone based dry lube in an aerosol can.

I used Armor All.

Who doesn't love Armor All all over everything. As a matter of fact, I highly recommend applying a generous amount to your seat just before the big race....

I actually fell for that once in my early days. I slid all around the seat of my CB550.

As absurd as this sounds, I've used it to great effect. I've also used various other greases and all have the same problem: They allow the boots to come off as easily as they go on. Every time I'd take the tank cover off, the airbox would be unseated. The KY on the other hand dries up very quickly and actually leaves a bit of residue that lightly seals the carbs to the boots. The next time you take the airbox off you just need to wipe the boots and carbs off with a damp rag and reapply. You only need a very thin coating. And of course, it's totally compatible with the rubber (pun heavily intended).

i dunno why everyone always has problems with the air box ... i can put mine on with one hand , put the nub in the hole and gently push down , pops right on . maybe it's just because my bike has so few miles on it .

I don't have a problem with mine, on my FZR600, either, but the FZR400 airbox that I have has boots that are rock hard.

I think the boots shrink a little as they get older. My biggest issue is that at some point a previous owner put the airbox on with the front of two of the boots pinched and then cranked down the clamps. It probably sat that way for years because the shape of the boots in question is now permanently mangled. They still work fine, I just need to make sure they go on right.
