FZR running with no battery

ok so i have a 92 fzr 600. i can start it up sometimes and remove the battery and it stays running no problem, other times ill unhook the battery and it stops running, what is the cause of this. is this normal?? my battery btw is brand new and fully charged. thanks!!

Why would you want to remove the battery?
1990 FZR 1000, 1993 engine, terrible state... but improving.

The FZR electrical system is designed to operate with a functioning battery to balance and smooth the charging system output (acts like an engine flywheel), and to provide a reference voltage for the VRR. Removing the battery voids any assurance that it will operate in a predictable manner, and may very quickly damage your VRR.
