Oil Change question with pics

Bike: 1989 FZR 1000

I'm tackling my first ever oil change!!! Need some guidance. Where do I add the oil. Seems simple enough but looking at the photo there seems to be two places where I can remove the knobs and add the oil. Which knob do I remove??? Also the other picture is where I think is the drain for the oil. Phillips heads screw on it. Am I right??

So basically I drain the oil by removing the plug. Then seal the plug along with a new washer. Replace the oil filter then add the appropriate amount of oil.

Oil is added into the outer most cap the inner cap is believed to have been created for access when the cases were machined. Also to drain the oil make yourself a v shaped cardboard chute that can be wedged to the rear of the drain plug, it'll stop the oil running all over the exhaust header

Looks like the Exup may be ready for some attention too!

Thanks Stig!!! Always helping a brother out. What do you mean when you say "the cases were machined?" Also, as I believe, the exup has been removed from this bike or disconnected. When you say the exup needs attention, how do you know? I picked up this bike from a gentleman locally. It's a streetfighter style. Stage 3 jet kit, Yoshi exhaust, k&n pods...etc.

One more thing guys. For the life of me I cannot remove the oil filter case. This bolt will not budge at all. Could this be a reverse threaded bolt?? Any insight on how to remove this.

When engines are created at the factory the sections are cast. Yamaha then have to drill and bore things like oil galleries to allow lubrication in to the working parts. The extra hole is believed to be created to allow the machinery access to the areas needing machining.

I thought the Exup valve cover looked a bit rusty as thought it hadn't seen recent attention but if it's been removed it won't be an issue

The oil filter bolt is normal direction thread.... Anti clockwise to undo
If its not broken it dont need fixing

After you do get it removed, put some anti-seize on those threads before you re-install. :thumbsup:

Soak it in Liquid Wrench or other penetrating oil overnight - few things are more annoying than buying new / repairing old cases because you ripped the oil filter threads out!

I am betting ALL the friction keeping it from turning is in that joint between the steel bolt and the cast filter casing.

Focus your penetrating lube there.

Took it to the dealer and they took care of it for me. Good thing I let them handle it because the oil filter that was on there didn't have a gasket...go figure. Not sure if that was something I would have caught. Thanks for all the input guys!!!
