carb problems i think. please help!!

Post by jbrunell »

so i just bought a 91 fzr and the guy i bought it off of said it was just rebuilt but he never tried to get it running. i got it running but when i rev it, the rpms stay at high rpms and i have to turn the idle screw way out for the rpms to come down then once they do come back down i have to turn the idle screw back in to a proper idle. any ideas why that is? is there something sticking in the carbs or something??

First keep a solid eye on the throttle cable and the return cable that is directly underneath that. Sounds to me like dirty carbs mixed with a loose/broken return cable. But thats just where I would start. Im by no means a professional.

both throttle and return cable are not connected. the throttle spring on the carbs is fine. and completely took the carbs apart and cleaned them.

I would be checking all of the float heights, check for sticking float valves, ensure all jets were properly reseated - basically going through the carbs again.

Sounds like someone sold you a mess.

Sounds like a potential lean condition. Could be caused by vacuum leaks from the intake spigots or rubber couplers. You can check for vacuum leaks by spraying "quick start" (ether) around the intake spigots while the motor is idling. If RPM changes after spraying that would indicate a leak. Make sure the rubber couplers are not cracked and that the clamps are tight to ensure a good seal. Check for any loose intake spigot bolts.

You can also try backing out your pilot screws to enrichen the pilot mixture.

Good luck
FZR400 (1WG): Purchased a perfectly good FZR400 with Yoshimura slip-on/EXUP, Yosh jet kit, Factory ignition advance, Racetech springs and emulators. It even had great bodywork. Like some diseased maniac I had to mess with everything good about that bike. Well, at least I have better brakes now.

FZR400RR (3TJ):Yeah, it's pink.
