There's a casting line or a seam of sorts on the crankcase that you line that mark up with. It's located towards the front-of-the-bike side of the flywheel and is in a nearly horizontal orientation. Couldn't find any pictures that illustrate this, but hopefully my wording helps clear things up.
In chronological order:
V&H SS2r full exhaust (previous owner)
R6 voltage regulator
.85kg Race Tech fork springs, 15w fork oil
R6 front calipers and master cylinder, EBC HH sintered pads
FZ1 rear shock with stock FZR600 spring
Factory Pro emulsion tubes
Motoman high velocity porting
New rings with Motoman hard break-in
DynoJet Stage 1: 118 main, clip 5, 24mm float, mixture screws temperature tuned to 400-420 *F
Barnett clutch friction plates and springs
K&N drop in air filter
*Pending* Escort ZX2 coil conversion
NGK CR9eIX Iridium spark plugs
Bridgestone BT-014's (110 front, 150 rear)
Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40
Shark RSR2 helmet, Frank Thomas Strike Titanium jacket, Icon Mil-Spec vest (for visibility)

The casting line is on the left side of the timing wheel.

It's the same way in the Yamaha Manual. Not sure why they did that.
