To break or not to break........
I bought a little FZR250RR unseen as I have been after a replacement engine/carb setup for my 50K Km+ 3LN3 bike. I knew it was accident damaged to the LHS and an 'engine casing was shot'.
In for a surprise I was! Turns out its a 1989 3LN1 with 14K Km on the clock. Now knowing the reg number I have traced that it was imported to the UK in 1999 and last taxed for road use in 2002!
All the front fairings are shot, the forks have rust pits so would need new stanchions and indeed the starter clutch housing is foobarred. However the mileage looks genuine and otherwise it looks all there, unmolested and pretty damn good. I drained & whipped the tank off and the fuel filter. With a fresh battery and fuel she was running in 10 minutes. the carb linkages were sticky so the revs didnt die down quick. Oil came from the hole in the sprag clutch casing so no chance to run it upto temp.
To damn good to break Front fairings only fit for the bin, new stanchions, seals and front break pads would be needed plus left handlebar
10 years of dust build up. Clocks frame and horn looked like with a scrub up.
Ah! That'll be the damaged casing then, yes oil did come out of it
Original stickers (and more) still all over it.
If I knew I could get replacement fairings for reasonable ££££ I would seriously consider recommisioning it. I love these little 250's and this one shouldn't have the hole at 14k rpm my one has

Snowing over there is it??
Apart from the obvious damage that just needs some spit and polish!
I wish mine had been that good when I got it!
My forks were rust pitted but a scrub with steel soap pads and a good polish sorted that
save me , save me!
Make an offer!

Re: To break or not to break........
I just got this one
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300820332550
My first aim is to get the motor running and up to temp - get the fan kicking in. If it dont grumble or leak then all is good. I've ordered an oil filter and I have some new oil in the shed already. Going to get a price on the fork stanchions....
EDIT: Fork stanchions 3LN-23110-00 are £139 inc VAT each........ouch
And that snow......is made of soap suds!

Re: To break or not to break........
If its the chinese fairings, I have seen the 2KR ones and the 3LN3 ones with the projector headlamp - but not the 3LN1 version with the two separate headlamps.
If you have a link post it!!
Was thinking about these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280762052135 and using the original rear light and light panel. I would have to fit the subframe and headlight from my 3LN3 then.

Re: To break or not to break........
Excellent link! I am due a bit of ££ this summer so I may leave it tucked in the shed and wait for a few bits to turn up . Engine cover arrived today so I gave it a quick rub down and painted it. Will drain the fluids at the weekend and fit it.

Re: To break or not to break........
I have finally found what I'm lookin for
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281119112623
A replacement set in original colours
Better start saving for the new stanchions now. Expect a strip and rebuild thread. Still looking for another 3LN3 engine for the sump though.....
Chris
*edit* just ordered them, seller was happy enough to swap the front mudguard for a clear screen - mine is clean enough. This means I gotta start sooner than I though

Re: To break or not to break........
The Chinese fairings have arrived! Pics to follow.
I have had the rear swingarm out and regreased every suspension bearing. I know the mileage is low but this bike is going to my dad now and he'll use it till he hangs his boots up no doubt, so I'd rather do them for my peace of mind!
Got the exhaust headers off too. No snapped studs but 6 of 8 came out with the nuts! new studs, nuts and ex gaskets ordered (part number has changed by the way!). While the headers were off I took the chance to change the oil filter as it goes in from the bottom of the sump. Upped the preload on the shock to 5/7. Stripped the rear caliper, cleaned all the gunk out of the seal housings and lubed with red grease. The rear master cylinder is next. Got a new chain but waiting for new sprockets/tyres to fit.
Gonna have to sort out the rust in one of the two tanks I have soon
