1994 Failed Emissions

Post by nb2288 »

Hi!
Arizona is the only state that still does MC emissions and the EPA is slated approve to allow us to stop testing next month...

I just bought a 1994 fzr600. The bike runs great but I took the bike into the shop to have the carb's synced. I was told that the bike is running lean. The person I bought it from added a K&N Air Filter and a Yoshimura pipe but never jetted the carbs. They said they opened the jets all the way but it's still lean and might not pass. Well I took it in to emissions and it failed on Hydrocarbons(2200ppm allowed 1800ppm)... Now from what I know if you change the air flow you need to rejet to make up for the new air.. Well I just use it to commute and don't care for the mods, so I want to return to stock. Problem is finding a good pipe... My emissions is due in 5 days so I was wondering if just dropping in the stock air filter will restrict it enough to richen it up to pass or will I have to replace the pipe as well?

I have changed the oil and flushed the rad. I will be replacing the spark plugs tonight as well.

Also this might be a factor in the engine running lean but there is a dead spot in 5-6k range.

Any input would be welcome! Thank you.

You are rich, at least in the test range rpm. You need to LEAN IT OUT

How fast (RPMs) are they testing the HC levels? It it's at idle you can probably adjust the idle mixture screws down to make it pass.

They do an Idle test and then rev to 2200-2800 for 30 seconds.

The mechanic said he turned the jet screws? (I'm not sure that's the right term. ) all the way out or in...

I left off that my CO readings where well below the max

From my research very low CO and high HC shows a lean mixture. In my case this is caused by to much air and not enough fuel. With the needle/fuel being maxed out for the stock jet I need to restrict the air intake to rich up the mixture.

Where you at in Arizona? I'm in Gilbert. I hope they do get rid of the emission testing so I won't have to worry bout my 2 fzr's when I get them running and I won't have to do my fz6 again!
