400 Fairing options

Post by Murat »

I know that a few people here converted to FZR600 fairings and if one of you is reading this, can you comment on the quality of the FZR600 fairings. I own a '90 400 and a '90 1000. When comparing the fairings on the two, I noticed a clear superiority on the 1000 fairings. They were made of a very nice and flexible plastic. The 400 fairings on the other hand seem like they are made out Doritos. You even look at them funny and they want to crumble. For those that have FZR600 fairings, are they made of good material or are they cheap plastic like the 400 fairings? I'm also interested in possibly a YZF600 foxeye conversion. Has anyone done it? How are the YZF600 fairings in terms of material quality?

is it possible the 400 ones you had were fibreglass replacements? my 400 kit was pretty solid, i stripped it down and repainted it and saw none of the wanting to fall apart you mention!

You probably have excellent fairings since you have a much nicer second generation 400. I would love to have a 3TJ but unfortunately, we never got that model in the US.

Mine were original plastic 1WG fairings, but they were repaired a few times in the past by the previous owner that used it a s a race bike. Maybe they got harder from the heat of a plastic welder. They feel like they have a little flex in them. I'm just looking for a solution that gives me better durability. My upper and lower fairings have numerous cracks in them. I don't want to get fiberglass because they chip easily and none of them have the studs for the headlight mounting. Finding good oem 400 fairings is very hard in the US. I guess my point is that my FZR1000 just feels much better in terms of quality(the 400 is more fun to ride though). The fairings on the 1000 almost have the flex of a car bumper cover. You would have to hit it quite hard to break it. When i first bought the 1000 it was crashed hard on one side. The only thing that was broken was the windscreen and mirror. The fairings had some nasty scrapes, but no cracks.

My guess is that Yamaha switched to a much more flexible and better quality plastic in the early 90s. I don't know anyone in the area with a YZF or FZR600 to take a look. If I'm right about that, I would rather convert to newer and better bodywork rather than trying to find oem part in good shape.

this was on a 1wg! i guess with all the repairs it's done something to the overall rigidity. Though now you mention it the 3tj were even better! sorry i don't know about the 600 stuff, never even sat on one! sure someone will ba able to help soon!
