Not starting

Post by Bratman3401 »

Okay i have been working on a side build to pass time and i had this bike running before i took it apart to paint everything.
Now i put everything electrical back on it and try to start it and nothing.
I dont have a front wiring harness on it will that affect it?
I cant find a piece to clip into it to get the lights on the dash to light up.
The speedo and the temp guage are on but not the rest.
I hooked everything else up and when i try to start it it just clicks
all the accesories i have plugged in go on. i dont have the headlights tail lights or signals tho
but the dash will light up what lights do go on and when i click the starter button it all turns off and nothing
Does anyone have anything i can try i know i need a new harness i want one off of a newone with the upgraded vr but for now this is what i have and it isnt working!

B,
when it worked was that with a full harness or the cutdown version?
Then ask yourself what you have changed ?

My suspicion is that you have no ignition link (keyswitch) to make it fire OR you say you painted stuff you have no ground on the handle bar &/or frame ?

And i do have a key switch and it is grounded.
What is absolutely required to make the bike turn over and then to start

Ok , you have what you had when it started last, so it is most likely something you have done, Battery fully charged , fuses intact (I mean checked by meter NOT eye) check everything you un-plugged and see that there is no corrosion.

Did you remove the RH handle bar switch if so see that the run & starter switch are clean they are renown for being tempremental.

How is the battery? These bikes are notorious for needing a battery in really good shape to start the bike. If the gauges light up when you turn the key but goes out when you hit the start button, it sounds like the battery is not capable of starting the bike or you are missing something on the electrical side. Make sure you have all of the wires hooked up to the starter, battery, and frame (for grounds).

okay so i switched everything from my fzr that i ride everyday to it meaning the whole wiring harness and battery guages and all and when i hit the start button it just clicks at the silinoid once and it shows the oil light and the neutral light goes out and i know the battery is charged and all fuses are good my other bike starts and runs everytime

Long shot on this one, but MrFreeze5 had an issue with the starter once. If he loosened the wire terminal connection so that the wire was still connected but could move around the bike would start. But if it was tight like it should be then the bike would not start. The things you describe remind me of how he described things when he was hunting them down. Send him a message to see what he did.

One thing has me confused. Did you swap the entire electrical system from a running bike into yours and you still have the same problem? If so, then it has to be the starter motor or the starting gears in the engine.

yea i swapped it all and tryed a diffenent starter and it is something before the starter cuz it doesnt go past the solinoid it stops there with a click so it must be some type of ground issue. :(

If you have it all....lit up and ready to go (fuel pump runs, indicator/warning lights, etc.) and it all goes away when you hit the 'start' button, then it is a connectivity or battery capacity issue.

Somewhere in the system is a connection that will pass low amperage/low draw electrical...but WON'T handle the starter load.

My first check would be the battery + and - cables for corrosion. Keep working downstream from there. Could be internal corrosion in the start solenoid-but if you swapped that in from the running bike that shoulda resolved itself.

Make sure the battery leads and the red wire to the starter are in VERY good shape....ends/terminals ANd the wire strands. If the wire strands are black or green (not bright copper) they are getting crappy and should be replaced.

i thought the same thing too but i litteraly took every electrical part off of my running bike and switched it. so it cant be the battery cuz it is an oversized yzf battery with plenty of amps to crank it has to be some sorta ground issue but idk where the ground wire that u conect to the engine from the battery negative is grounded and the starter is grounded to the engine idk what it could be

Okay i went out again today to mess with it and i swapped every wire one at a time i first put it all back on the other bike turns over fine that was my test so then i slowly started running the wires from one to another i pulled them next to each other and tryed each plug and play wire after another and it boils down to the starter so i used the starter off of the running bike still nothing it does the click when i switched everything back onto the running bike the oil and neutral lights light up brighter so it does seem to be some sorta ground issue so i painted engine and frame what should i sand to metal to ground this out? what exactly needs to be grounded from engine to frame and btw the ground wire from the neutral battery cable is grounded
