I posted this up over on the Archives. Thought I'd get y'all's opinion also:
So I'm trying to get the valves and pistons all cleaned up and all seems to be going fairly well. However, one issue that I'm having is that the exhaust valves appear to have what looks like carbon build up on them but I don't think that's what it is. It's REALLY on there good. The intakes cleaned up with no problem so I don't think it's the same thing. Does anyone know if this may be some kind of coating that just happens to be coming off?
i,m not good about engine, though ived remember before as what happened to my 400. im not really sure but resetting your valves can help to reduce carbon build-up. this was the idea of my mechanic. dont worry buddy, my mechanic is working right now this is the right time to ask about carbon build-up, i will just throw back some answer soon...
qualified mechanics uses filler gauge to check valve clearances. good timing between valve and the cam clearances will make better combustion resulting less carbon. correct me if im wrong but this is what my mechanic says. shims could be the best option too.
