'92 FZR600 issues (warning:novel)

Post by delvryboy »

Ok, picked up the bike in the welcome section. When I got it he said he had problems getting it to idle correctly and had the choke engaged. I rode it 70ish miles home like that. Before I left for work I upped the idle, it was set around 600rpm, to 1200 hot. Started and ran great with no choke. I made it 10 milesn(a few blocks from work) and it started to miss and sounded like its running on maybe half the cylinders. I limped to within a block of the job before it died and wouldn't start, so I pushed.

Being a newb and the bike being stranded at work, I found a mechanic a couple miles away that gladly came and loaded it in his van. The days that insued I did some research and found he lives off the upsell, is overpriced, and is a genuine a-hole.

$300 later:

The bike is running. The guy said 2nd gear is about to blow and if I baby it, it may last the summer. He'll gladly sell me an engine/trans he just so happens to have laying around the shop for $1500. Of course, this is the only hope for the tranny. I haven't had any problems shifting or any grinding. I have some bucking in second, but that is due to me babying the throttle still( I think)

He said there was water in the tank, the plugs were fouled, and the carbs were out of adjustment. He says in order to get it running perfect, I need a jet kit... $300ish.

Right now, it idles for shit, misses below 3 grand and doesn't have a lot of power below 3k either. Above 3k seems to be good. It wasn't like this before hand. Idled great (after I reset it) and had good power from idle to wherever I chickened out :P

What I'm wondering is there anyone who is familiar with the FZR's in the Chicago area or know of a trustworthy person to take a look at it.

Also, any opinions on the tranny.

Thanks

Nate AKA"Thatkid" is in the Chicago area. I'd suggest sending him a PM. He knows these bikes pretty well....Anyway, from what it sounds like to me is your carbs are dirty. If you're good with tools you can have them off the bike, taken apart and cleaned, back on the bike, and "ball park" adjusted in roughly an hour (and that's being lazy about it). Sounds like this person you took your bike is trying to pull a fast one.

PLEASE dont spend $1500 on an engine and tranny. I just picked up an entire clean FZR for $1500. Often people will sell engines for around $300.

Also, do you know if this bike has an aftermarket exhaust (headers and can) and does it have the stock airbox or does it look like you have pod filters? These things would suggest needing a jet kit, if there's not already one in there

The bucking you experience is most likely the babying of the throttle. If it was the gear failing, it would pop out of second back into neutral.

See if you can pull the tank off and drain the gas and refill it with some new premium gas and a little Seafoam (you can pick seafoam up at any auto parts store and sometimes at hardware stores). Then let it idle a little bit to get this new clean gas and seafoam mixture into the carbs and see if that does anything for you.

It does have headers and a yoshi slip-on. I wouldn't dare spend $1500 on an engine, trust me. I have 2 weeks off coming up and I'll get the tank off and go from there. Right now, it idles at 1k, i'm going to bump it up to about 1200-1300.

Right now I'm going to take the trans issues with a grain of salt. I don't seem to have any problems, not even the "known 2nd gear" problem I have read about here. I do get the occasional clunk when I drop it in first, but to be honest, every bike I have rode did the same thing.

Still would like someone in the know to take it for a ride and give me an opinion.

Where are you in Chicago or near? I live about 40 min north of the city in the NW burbs. I'm happy to take a look at the bike and ride it/give my opinion. We can go from there. I'll give you an honest opinion. I have no interest in being a douche and can't stand anyone that is. If/when it comes down to it, I work pretty cheap. It sure won't be $300 to tell you that you need a $1500 motor. You should go back and just slap the guy. Tell him you already paid him for it. Send me a PM and lets get you running properly.

Thanks. I live on the NW side in the city. Figure Park Ridge/Niles area. I start my vacation in a week, so I'll send you a PM.

It does seem to run a lot better when its hot, maybe 20 minutes into a ride, but I still have some hesitation. I know these bikes aren't the best at low RPM, but I know it should definitely run better. Living in the city, with alleys and speed bumps on every side road, I need the ability to putt around the neighborhood.

As far as the tranny, no problems so far besides the clunk when I put it in first. The bucking was all my fault, just trying to get used to the bike.

Hi,
That the bike ran ok before Mr greedy 4 dollar bills got his hands on it suggests he fiddled with the setting to make you panic and pay him loads of cash.

1500 for an engine is ridiculous unless it is afreshly built race tuned job, not some hack ride which will usually be found from 150 upwards

That Kid has worked for guys on this board and I have NEVER heard anyone whinge about workmanship or costs, he has put his talent to work for free with sound advice right here on the forum.

Listen to what he says carefully and you will learn alot. Hang out with us and post pictures of the bike (those of us who cannot read love the pictures

Hell, I don't even know why. :headscratch:

Got the bike naked tonight and realized this thing is a breeze to work on vs. cars. Should be a fun winter. ;)
