Valve Shims

How do I get the shims out? Am I going to need a shim tool? This is what I am looking at.

Shims???? Can you explain me what do you mean by that? And i maybe can help you

That tool is for compressing the valve bucket while the cams are in place. It is for engines with shim OVER bucket lash adj. Ours are shim UNDER bucket. The cams HAVE to come out.

No, you don't need this tool. YOu need a nice magnet to slide the buckets out, that's all.

Now, if you are servicing the valves at all....removing them....

Use the real Yamaha special tool to compress the springs.....

DO NOT use a generic 'valve spring compresser'. The aluminum bore the buckets run in is very soft, very precise and will give you problems if you nick it at all.

This is just a valve adjustment. This is my first time doing it so Im just feeling everything out. So far its not hard at all. Now all I have to do is find some shims.

Cool. Make sure the buckets go back in the bore they came out of (don't mix em up). (the 18count egg cartons work nice for keeping track of valve stuff)

Sometimes the shims stay in the bucket, sometimes they wil stay atop the valve.

Go slow, write everything down, double check your math and everything should go well for you. You can buy asst. shim packs but usually they aren't worth it if you just have this bike that has this size shim.

things to look for are valves that are quite a bit out of the normal trend (for example- if all intakes are .003-.004 out and one is .007 take a good look at that odd one).

Here are the numbers that I got. I'm a little on the fence about the .11 valve but I'd like to bring it closer to the .13 the other is at.

Yup. Just got 174 and 190 shim sizes. That will bring #4 to .12 and #1 to .12 also.

Have you disassemlpe the valves yet? Now i know what you need. I just saw the photo. I did all this job on my fzr400 in the past. It's quite easy job. You must have a valve compressor tool. Otherwise you must have a stable drill (to help you on the compression) and mount a small fabrication on its edge. What i mean??? I'll take some pics tomorrow to post here and show you.

Lol, I'm not going to touch the valves. It was just a shim job. But post up that pics anyway, I'd like to see 'em.
