Gauges acting funny

Post by erawtik »

I have a 95 fzr600 that i just picked up and i started and ran it and my gauges all worked fine like the neutral, rpm, temp. But the headlights didnt work. I left it in the garage for the night and went out today started it up and now the head lights work but the other gauges dont. An idea where to start looking for a problem like this? And another ? what year range will work with my bike? It seems a few things i have found the range was like 89-99 is this correct?

pull your plug on the regulator on the rear left side, chances are it's fried like mine. Mine got too hot and fused the plastic plug to the regulator, i'm experiencing the same problems, but my turn sigs and horn don't work either. Check the bulbs on the gauge cluster that aren't working, they are probably blown, if they are blown then it is more than likely the regulator. Just don't pull the plug out of the regulator if you have to ride this daily. I destroyed my plug pulling the thing out and had to rig it to work until my new one comes in. Get a yzf600 one on ebay..i got mine for $26 with shipping. All it needs is a simple rewire once you get it.

yes. 89-99 fzr600 parts are all interchangeable. and a few yzf600 parts work since it was designed off of the fzr to lessen design costs.

if you need to replace any fairings make sure they are the ones made from 1993 to 1998.

1992 front fairing and headlight shape are totally different. 1989 front brake calipers are different, wheel widths for 1989/90 tend to vary also. Anything you get is better if it's from 1993 up.

There may be other miscellaneous parts i'm not thinking of, others hopefully chime in here. Get a Clymer or Haynes manual if you can find one, sometimes they are on E-bay or Amazon used. That book will tell you a lot more about specific components. I'd be lost without mine.

Generally speaking most major parts are compatible though. Post pictures of the bike if you can.

Welcome to the forum.

You should also look into the contacts on the starter button. That fits with the headlights but not so much with the gauges.

i don't mean any disrespect, but i'll have to disagree with you there. I have an 89 parts FZR and a 91 daily rider. I swapped calipers between the two when i got the parts bike because the other ones were perfect, and a month later I swapped the forks because mine were bent. And I never had an issue with calipers. BUT the parts FZR looks like it's been wrecked and restored at one time, and there is a pretty good possibility that maybe they swapped out the entire front with a later year FZR. As far as i know though, 89 calipers are the same.

yeah, the red/yellow wire and the blue/black wire run through the start switch to shut off the headlight and indicator lights when you press the start button. so if it's a bad connection then you'll have problems. I wired mine together so the headlight didn't shut off because i was having problems with mine.

someone may have switched out your forks then. you can check the parts fische drawings for those years and see the difference. also the calipers for 89 are 2-pot, not 4-pot.

The start switch is the cause of the headlights. You can jiggle the switch and get them to come on some times if they go out. The "Idiot" lights are a different problem. You probably have a blown fuse. Check them first. If one is blown, you need to start looking at the wiring for a frayed wire or one not connected and therefore making conntact with the frame or some other metal section. This is blowing the fuse and will blow a new one every 5-10 minutes if you don't find it.

As for switching to newer gauges, all of the model years will work. You will want to find one with wires attached though just to make it easy. You could also switch a set of '95-'07 YZF600 gauges into it as well. But if you do that, you'll need to switch some wiring around and problably the tach as well.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

the gauges was caused from a blown fuse i changed that and now they work. But the headlights still wont come on iv seen them on once when i got the bike so i know they work. I wiggled all the wires under the seat so now il check the switches. So to the person who said stay away from 89-92 parts I was looking at a front and rear wheel from an 89 will these not work and i do need some plastic, i only have the rear peice im fine without most of the plastic but i do want the front. Il get a book most likely next week when the shop opens the run banker hours. And how much oil for a oil and filter change im gonna go up to autozone and see about oil and filter i seen they carry motorcycle oil.

I'd stay away from 1989 wheels as the widths are smaller than the other years.

Try to support your local bike shop if you have one. I only go to AutoZone if i need Mechanix gloves, tools, or stuff for the car.

Just curious, how many miles is on your bike ?

Also, if your local bike shop actually has a Clymer manual for the FZR, i'll poop an adobe brick, as, none of the bike shops around here have any such book, in fact for any year bike. Seems most people have to find them online.

Also, you might want to set an appointment to have the oil in your forks changed. If you have the correct tools and skills you can do this yourself, but I believe you either need an expensive "front stand" or be able to somehow lift the bike into the air so the front wheel is just hanging, remove it, etc. etc. etc. Not an easy task. When you set the appointment also have them flush your radiator and put in new anti-freeze or "Engine Ice". After a couple years the antifreeze can get pretty nasty and if enough years go by scale (similar to rust) can muck up the inside of the radiator, hoses, thermostat, etc. Take some photos and post them so we can see what condition the bike is in, and others may think of other maintenance items you need to do.

if it's just your headlight, then check your plug on the headlight. the guy that had my bike before me put a in hotter bulb that was bright white/blue that pulled too much power and generated to much heat so it melted the plug behind the headlight when i had it on high beam and my headlight went out. hopefully your previous owner was smarter than that.

i have every bike shop around honda, harley, yamaha, kaw, susuki. The problem is getting to yamaha before they close. Hell susuki/kaw is 1 block away, yamaha is on the other end of town and horrible to get to in time. As far as miles it has 9600. And for the forks il do that myself iv pulled and rebuilt motors in trucks and cars in my garage. Il have to make my own stand for the bike. And thanks for the tip on the tires cause auction ends soon so il stay away from them. Sucks is for front and rear i only find dif colored ones no same color pair. Oh and i fixed the headlights, the starter switch is staying in a bit to far so if i pull it out lights come right on.

awesome, great to have another gear head on the board.

I'm not one, I just got the "wrench" symbol because I'm the squeaky wheel.

I'm happy to change my oil without cutting my finger off
