New Member and a New Bike (Inc. Pictures)

Hey everyone. My name is Kieran, I'm 19 and living in Ireland. This is my first post here I'm picking up my FZR 400 project bike tomorrow. It needs quite a bit of work but thankfully I have plenty of time being unemployed and all. I put a few pics up of the bike, maybe some of you could give me advice where to begin? She does run but as per usual bike that have been let get in this state need tuning. Also some fairings have gone walkabout This is my first FZR, have done work on smaller bikes, mostly Suzuki 125's . Could anyone tell me exactly what model of FZR 400 this is? Hope to hear from you guys soon

Hi Kieran;
From what I can make out; it is a 1986/87 Genesis.
This was the first FZR 400.
It should have different forks.
The originals were 38mm dia but only 2 piston calipers
It looks like yours are still 38mm (the bars above the top yoke are the indication) but have spacing for the 4 pot calipers
(100mm bolt centers)
This is a good upgrade; it means blue spot calipers can be fitted if you wished.

The s/a looks to be off a 1989 3EN2.
The wheel is probably still 18".

Don't worry ; all FZR 400s have only 1WG as an engine number in UK,

You will struggle to obtain replacement Genesis fairings; most use the much cheaper and easier obtained FZR 600 3HE
pattern ones on a Genesis.

The rear seat panel is still easy and cheap to source s/h.

They are a nice bike when they are in good condition.

Thanks for the reply The reg is a 1992. Was a great reply from you as I really know nothing about these bikes. The plan is to get her road worthy again. Thankfully it's not my first project to have undertaken. I've luckily found a source for FZR 400 fairings here in Ireland of a bike for parts so I presume that means I'm lucky I do have quite a few plans for this bike when I get it completely sound. Brakes need work also. But its great to have this community and hopefully I'll have her looking clean in the next few months

1992 was when it was registered in whatever country it was imported to, not the year of manufacture.
Check the frame no. on the headstock against the model identifier.I can see from here the engine is an 86.

All FZR 400 models EXCEPT the very last model =3TJ 4DX were a pre used import into Europe= grey import.
USA/Canada/Oz/NZ got similar models new.

Find out what model the used fairings are off; the headlamp/instrument subframe (birdcage) and mirror stay are
particular to each model

I would get the engine running correctly on that bike before I spent a penny on the refurb.
So many dive in and spend good money on refurb only to find the engine ( well barrels/pistons/head/valves anyway) is past its best.
They then have to source and pay for a good 400 unit or drop a 600 lump in.

I'd go with Will on that - clean the carbs and do the valve shims. I'd drop the sump and clean it out before you change the oil.

A lot of the parts are common to the 600 3HE model but the 3HE was evolved along it's model life.
