Stay screw mounts

So I was trying to loose the stay mounts on the upper fairing but now the screw spins freely with the flange nut. How can I remove them now? More importantly, how do I remove the fairing from the metal stay? Thanks.

That sucks. I am thinking your best bet is to remove the entire stay assy from the bike-with the fairing. You may be able to destroy the thick rubber grommet in order to clamp some needle nose vise grips behind the nut to hold the stud/keep it from spinning. You may even be able to get between the grommet and the fairing to do this.

reelrazor is correct, i had the same issue and got some locking needle nose vice grips behing and held the other end while i got the nut off. Hard fitting back there but didnt take too long, had to replace it and just JB welded the bolt back into the housing it broke out of. that was 6 months ago at least and no issue with it yet. Thanks for the reply. I was worried I'm stuck hacking the upper off. Glad to know someone had the same problem as me!

Lets see if I get this correctly: So take off entire stay assembly. Hack off rubber mounts to get access with a pair of needle nose vice grips. Turn flange out. Fit screws back in with JB Weld. Sounds right? Are the rubber mounts available for purchase still?

Yes, that sounds right. The rubber gromet mount I found at a motorcycle junk yard. Don't know if they sell them locally or even what or where they would be located in a catalogue. But I'm sure someone else could chime in on locating them online somewhere. You could start with the wiki, "where to buy my parts from" at the bottom of the page has a list of places and what they sell and the quality of the company. Good luck man, it was frustrating for me too but a relatively easy fix. Just make sure you center the bolt in the JB weld good so its not crooked. I used some tape on top of the bolt to stick down below the housing where the JB is at to keep it centered. Check it while the weld is still tacky to make sure its straight before it hardens all the way.

You need a penny washer behind the nut so it spreads the pressure against the whole area of the grommet.

Take the captive bolt out the fairing and clean the knurled surface with a wire brush. Then stick it back in with 2 pack epooxy. Put the frame over the fairing so it holds the nut vertical as it dries

The bolt (the part that is spinning) is press fit and glued into the upper fairing. If it is spinning then it has stripped the plastic of the fairing.

To remove the fairing, just undo everything else that is holding the fairing on, then pull straight forward on the fairing to remove the fairing. The bolt will slide right out of the plastic fairing and remain on the fairing stay.

To repair, just fill the hole in the fairing with epoxy and push the bolt (once removed from the upper fairing stay) into the epoxy. Mount when the epoxy sets.

I tried to pull it straight back and out, no go. How certain are you that the bolt stripped the plastic and will merely slide out? I don't want to keep pulling knowing it might damage something else and that is not the case.

I think mine had a slight lip that held it in, it might have been the glue they used.
Take the whole thing off and strip it down cut the gromet away then squeeze the plastic that holds the bolt that should do it.

That's how I removed mine when it stripped. Maybe you can turn the nut / post while pulling forward on the fairing. I know the rubber grommets (4 of them) that are attached to the fairing stay kinda hold onto the post of the fairing causing a little resistance in pulling it out. SInce the fairing will flex a little (remove the windscreen first) try pulling the fairing off the stay on 2 of the posts and work from there.
