major trany issues! Please HELP!

So, i hear a squeaking when i ride but it is only when i am in gear, if i pull the clutch it goes away. this had been there for the past 3 days, getting worse. then today i took off and a big clunk as it sat in gear, then in 3rd i tried to give it some gas and get around a car. All i got was a little bit of power and a bunch of clunking and grinding so i backed off and drove normally.

I know that these bikes have notoriously weak transmissions, my question is this. Has anyone had or herd of this issue? And if so is it most likely the clutch or the actual gears? I know i will have to take it apart to find out for sure but i was thinking of ordering a clutch kit with friction plates. Anyone have a good recommendation for brands for replacement or upgraded clutches?

Also i have never opened a bikes trans, anyone ever made or seen a writeup with pics to do it.

Am i okay to drive it until i can get it fixed or should i leave it alone. If i drive normally with no cranking on the throttle.

sounds like your clutch. it could be the clutch isn't engaging all the way. before you worry about the trans check the small stuff first. loosen the cable where it connects to the clutch lever. locate the nut cover by a rubber tab left of the sprocket cover. loosen that nut a quarter turn the tighten it till it stops. don't torque it. then go back to the clutch lever and tighten the cable. make sure you have a little play in the lever so the clutch will disengage.

So, i havent got the chance to take it out on the freeway and give it some gas but i did what you said and tightened my chain (was a lil loose) and i didnt hear any squealing driving around my neighborhood.

Me, I would take a quick look at the front sprocket.

It is possible that your sprocket retaining nut is loose/gone and your sprocket is slipping free of the splines/grinding itself and the shaft

okay, so i went back in there to look at the retaining bolt and this is what i found. The nut that holds the sprocket on is still good, tight as hell. however, there is one of the two small allen head screws missing, what could this do being gone. what are those small screws for?

so, i think the issue is my rear bearing now. Rode it around and no slipping but the squeak is still there. Read this post to see my new findings.

Those COULD be used for anti-rotation screws - you'll note that the head of any such screw would foul the sprocket nut if it began to rotate, preventing it from going for a wander. The second screw would be for balance. That said, the FZR600 does NOT use anti-rotation screws, but rather a bendable / foldable lock washer, with splines that lock it to the shaft and folding wings that wrap lovingly around one of the flats of the sprocket nut, again preventing it from loosening off. The proper part is 90215-21290-00; MSRP is a whopping $3.95 - cheap insurance to prevent your front sprocket from coming off.
