Bike wont shift past 2nd gear when running

Post by pearsonbe »

but it can be shifted to higher gears when not running. Does this sound like a clutch issue?

Sounds like your shift pedal or linkage is misadjusted or bent, and isn't allowing sufficient throw to complete the shift.

When it's on a stand and not running, it will shift through the gears. But on the road, it won't shift into third, fourth. etc. The retaining screw for the linkage was missing when I got the bike. And the end that connects to the splined shaft at the transmission would fall off sometimes. It wasn't a big issue since the bike was just sitting while we worked on the many problems it had.

Yesterday, we reinstalled the linkage and found a replacement screw. Maybe we didn't get it right. I will take a look at it again today. What is the adjustment procedure?

Don, I installed the new R6 VRR yesterday and your harness adapter made the job easy.

I read the adjustment procedure in the manual. Looks simple. I did some frame painting and will see if it just needs an adjustment. That would be good news. I've been working on this for months and want to ride.

The shift pedal needed a major adjustment. It's much better now! The clutch may need to be replaced. It does not engage smoothly in first gear. But that can wait.

Adjust your clutch mechanism at the sprocket cover. If it's out as bad as the pedal, you'll be replacing hard parts in short order.

Ok. Thanks. Lol. No surprise. This thing is needy as hell. Not necessarily the bikes fault. I believe it was ridden hard and put away wet.

I'm still having problems shifting. Finally got tags for the bike and planned to ride it to work yesterday. About a mile from the house at a red light, I couldn't shift into first gear. I guess it was in second. The bike stalled a few times and I had to rev high and slip the clutch to get going. Rocking the bike while shifting to first works eventually. It shouldn't be that difficult.

I didn't find information in my manual about an adjustment at the sprocket cover. You Tube wasn't helpful either. Can anyone provide more details?

Made small adjustments at the clutch pedal until it was right. I didnt know about the locknuts and rotating the shaft.
