No tires to light the fires

I'm looking for a new rear tire for my FZR600 I picked up a couple months ago. I noticed the one on it (I think)is a Bias and is quite narrow for a sportbike tire. it's a cheap Shinko SR741 140/70/18. The front is a new radial 110/70/17.

Storming through and finding many threads on tires for the back of these things led to me to a couple different tires as my top choices. The Bridgestone BT014 150/60/18 and the Avon AV56 150/70/18.

I was really wanting to try the Avon since it seemed to be highly recommended, but no luck in finding one. It seems as though they discontinued that size when then switched to the AV56 Storm 2 series.

I can't seem to locate a BT014 either....

Please tell me where to find one of these(preferably Avon) as I don't want to have to resort to using a Shinko Podium if I can help it.

I would do the swingarm swap for a better choice in tires...but I'm not so sure I'll be keeping this bike long enough to make the swap worth my time.

Make sure you have the 4x18 rear and not the 3.5x18. The 4x18 is much more common and will fit the 150 much better.

As for finding tires, I know it is getting difficult and I can't really help (sorry) since I converted to a 17" rear. Somebody will chime in shortly.

Yeah it's a 18x4 wheel....it's on a 97.

I wish I could find a TDM rear wheel....that would be a problem solver.

Shinko SR741? That's kinda strange ... that's a cruiser tire.

Anyway, I recently had a really hard time finding a rear tire for my FZR too, and ended up installing Shinko 006 Podiums front and rear.

Honestly, people tend to look down on Shinkos but, i've never actually read or heard anything bad about them. Since i've installed them, i have pushed them pretty hard, they turn/lean very easily and really stick to the road. Plus they are inexpensive .. I paid like $180 shipped for both front and rear, and so even if tire life ends up being short, the replacement costs are low enough.

Also i wanted to go with close to stock setup; I have 110/70R17 and 150/60R18 *I love the skinny tire setup because the bike flip flops so quickly!

If you do find a different brand with a good combination; please post What, Where and How much.

I had my son run out and look to see what was on the front, since I'm at work. he said it's a Shinko Podium.

I might just go with the Shinko matching rear at this point...since this is mostly a cruise around town bike anyway and will never be pushed to the limits of speed and sound.

I did happen to find the Avon in stock @ JCmotors...but how long will they remain available anywhere? Going with the Shinko will make it an easy choice for the next guy anyway,lol.

The latest Bridgestones are BT 90 or BT92 (more of a general use spec) in that size.BT 014 is out of production.
The Shinko Podium is not readily available here in UK,which is unfortunate.
You have a much better choice in USA/Canada.

I pulled the trigger on a Shinko...about $100 shipped.

If I keep the bike long enough to need new tires again, I'll do the rear 17" swap before the next set of tires. Yeah....that will make me feel better about this purchase anyway.

I been running the shinko 006 podiums for 2 seasons now and just shy of 10000 miles and haven't had any trouble at all out of them. I'm not a conservative rider, but yet not super aggressive either. They've handled everything I've thrown at them. Even temperature changes aren't a problem, ridden in 100+ all the way down to 15 degrees. IMO it's an underdog tire for the price.

For modern, track worthy rubber? There's nothing that I know of in a 140 or 150. My 400 will soon have to be converted to a 17" rear or it will be cleaned up and be a permanent fixture in the living room.

A greater choice can only be advantageous,it encourages competition on price and availability.

The Dunlop K81 was lapping the most demanding circuit in the world in 1969 at over 100mph and without ever seeing a Podium,I can gaurantee it will be a more competative tyre.
If you are comparing to the likes of a Supercorsa ;forget it!

Please show where in the topic that competition rubber is required,?
From my interpretation, a reasonably priced general purpose tyre was needed.
There are many specialist tyre suppliers mentioned on this forum that are US based which supply tyres that have long since become unavailable in the UK.

Changing to 17" is a simple task.
Nothing wrong with bikes in the house though...............
