Fuel pump issue

Post by Redoliander »

I finally got a battery for the bike. Turned the ignition on and didn't hear the pump come on. I had stuff to do in the house so when I came back out I tried it again. The pump was making a clicking sound and saw fuel moving to the filter. Tried to fire it up but nothing. Put a bit of fuel in the carbs and started right up but died cause the pump isn't working. When I turn the ignition to on sometimes I hear the pump and sometimes I don't. The bike is a 96 and had been sitting in storage for about 9 years with gas in it. Do you think it's just gummed up from sitting and just throw some sea foam, or Marvels Mystery Oil in it? Or is it possibly bad?

Fuel pump issue

Nope. Drained it all. Put new fuel lines and fuel filter on. :)

The pump is self regulating. You'll hear it when the pressure is low. Soon as it comes up (should be around 5 psi) it'll stop. If you haven't given the carbs a cleaning, I'd suggest doing that along with a set of new plugs. If the planets are aligned (I made a funny there you see...), then it should fire up.

Hook a good multi meter up to the pump leads and make sure the voltage is not below 12vdc as you turn the key on. Sweekster is right about the pump being self regulated but its a 2 to 3 psi system, any higher and it will force the needle seats open and flood the system. You should have a good 12vdc supply during and after the pump shuts off, any less and it cannot operate correctly. A good amount of clean fuel will refresh the varnished fuel enough to burn it thorough the engine, alot of varnish will take a longer time to disolve into the good fuel. All fzr 600's will use the pump at key on and when it has filled the carbs it will shut off, but will always run at first initial key on, as a pre prime feature. If you only hear it intermitenly, then the windings in the motor are burnt out or the brushes are worn causing weak (intermitent ) performance. Id look into another pump used/new to easily check, hope this helps
