Same again tomorrow, but a detour on the way home via some fast roads. Someone at work whom owned one of these years ago said something about reverse polarity caused by the generator starting to break down. Sound feasible???????????

NOT a "gennie"

It's an alternator...as in 'alternating current'-a three phase one to be exact. With a triad of windings on the stator being excited by a series of magnets in the flywheel.

There is NO polarity in regards to the alternator wiring.

The regulator/rectifier handles the conversion from AC to DC...look to it for trouble. Especially at the reg/rect's grounding path. This may be the source of your intermittant failure.

Tho, thinking more deeply upon it, I would suspect a general connectivity issue....poor wire connections and/or broken wire/bad terminal crimp.

Clean up every connection involved...the three phase stator output (trio of white wires)..connections at the reg/rect...reg/rect. grounding..and charge lead from reg/rect. Apply dielectric grease to the clean terminals.

See if the problem disappears.
I'll have a look at all that, although all the connectors are brand new, so I'll look at the wires all again. The R6 regulator was secondhand though. Also I've had the bike for the last 2 days and it has been totally reliable, and I've not been exactly gentle with it. But as I've said I will beat this. I've not been beaten by a problem yet.
And Mikey. It will not break again.
Reelrazor Thank you for the advice.
The weekend will bring results :headbang: :headbang:

Having followed advice with all the connectors and wiring, I discovered that the rectifier mounting plate had snapped at one point from the frame. So I drilled a new earth point into the subframe, then removed the plate completely, ground down the weld points and attached the plate directly to the frame. Checked EVERYTHING again and went for a bit of a ride. Just waiting now for Gizzard to finish work and then he can come round and admire my work.
Thanks for all the advice guys hopefully she is now cured.

well done that man, keep an eye on the joints where frame & plate meet they are likely to corrode, learned that one on another bike

1. This is what I have done...
2. This is what I think...

I've attached the plate with screws to the frame and lots of thread lock. Loads and loads of checks again. Gizzard came round this afternoon and has ridden away on the FZR. I've got a good feeling with it now. Hopefully he can start to enjoy his sports bike now.

Since my last post about my sons FZR600, he has enjoyed trouble free riding and putting some serious mileage on to the odometer. Thanks for all the help guys with this. He's now gonna take it off the road for the winter and give it some TLC on the looks front not that it needs a lot.
