Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
Well, this will all have to wait until I get a replacement set of coils. I pulled them out of the bike to retest the resistance on all of the wires. Everything seamed good except for two of the plug caps. Unfortunatly, I decided to try and replace the plug wires and the second one I pulled out snapped off inside the coil. So it's fubar'ed. I'm eyeing a set on e-bay that are from a '98 right now. Unfortunatly, the auction does not end till Wednesday around luch time.
Thanks for the help guys. I'll let you know once I'm back to it.

Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
Hey cad,
I was having similar problems as you. Everything was within spec and was turning over like a champ.
I adjusted my air/fuel screws to 4 turns out and that did the trick. Giving it doesn't run all that well but it started up.

Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
i just experenced the same problem after I cleaned my carbs and did some jet adjusting.
it would only stay running when I held the throttle open.
so I turned the idle screw a million times clockwise and that did the trick.

Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
Does anyone have a picture of the Idle mixture screws? I'm being a little thick headed with my repair manual and want to make sure I'm looking at the correct thing.

Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
I dont have a pic, but the top four circles are where the FUEL mixture screws are located ...
p.s. this is a picture of the BOTTOM of the carbs...the screws are in the cylinder shapped thing right by the fuel drain screw
the idle SCREW is the thing coming from the top of the carbs in the pic and is being held up by a metal bracket
Fuel mixture screws require a small flat-head screwdriver
Idle screw requires either your fingers or fillips head screwdriver

Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
Well, I started messing wth the mixture screws. I'm up to 4 full turns out and it almost wants to start. I actually smelled real exhaust fumes coming from the Yoshi pipe. How many turns out until it is really too many?

Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
mine is turned 2 full turns out, and im running rich. I need to turn them back in some more so I go threw less fuel.

Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
Just hurry up rob and get that damn bike started before it god damn snows! I would like to go riding with ya!
Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
4-1/2 turns out and it still will not start. It actually sounds worse than it did at 4 turns out. It occured to me today that the tank vent might be clogged (YZF tank) but with my luck right now, that won't be the cause.
Did find out that it takes 12 turns to get the fuel mixture screws to come out. I used a spare crab that I had to figure that out.

Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
if its not fixed yet i would check all 4 of the fuses in the fuse block under the seat... i blew a fuse somehow when i first got the bike and it refused to start or anything... i tried bump starting it and everything... please let me know i want to say it was one of the middle but i dont know... good luck man...
Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
Damn dude.
It's time to go back to basics on this one. It shouldn't be so hard. Something simple is getting overlooked. Fuel tank vent will casue a stall after running a while. And is easy to check (pull the cap off and see if it starts)
Air + fuel, compression, and spark(at the right time)

Re: My turn for a Will Not Start
So I started over again on the fuel mixture screws. I also removed the fuse for the gauges and HID to keep them from draining power while starting. I know it shouldn't matter, but it did actually help a little. But I discovered a new issue.
What does it mean when you have fuel coming from the gasket of the valve cover? It is looks like it is coming from cylinder #1 or 2. What is it and could this prevent starting?

FUEL?? from the valve cover?!! You sure?? You sure it isn't getting sprayed there from a carb or intake boot?cad600 wrote:So I started over again on the fuel mixture screws. means something is really f***** up. Like you have a crack in the cylinder head that goes from cam chest to intake port? Or your intake valve guides are goone!
Is the engine FULL of fuel(float valve in carb stuck open)??
