Re: Locked up 93 engine?
Plugs out.
Engage a high gear.
Attempt to rotate rear wheel to spin motor.
If resistance;remove starter gear cover and intermediate pinion.
If still resistance, more than likely a crank/rod/camshaft issue.
Piston siezure is rarely instantaneous on a 4 stroke engine, nor are coolant issues.
Complete piston failure is very rare.

pull the peanut cover first...
The starter gears are under it and are a likely culprit

Re: Locked up 93 engine?
Well... I have more digging to do, but it turns out somebody's missing teeth. Have to wait for my book to come so I can take all apart and clean all the shrapnel out. And replace all that are missing teeth.
Guess some teeth binded it up so nothing moving gear wise. Question is, am I going to find parts for it once I figure out the parts needed?

The one side cranks with ease - believe this is the cam shaft and piston crank. However the clutch gears there's teeth missing. Just not sure if its from the clutch or if its timing teeth (maybe possible). Won't know until get it all out. I saw a vid on YouTube that the valve rocker arms broke and cause lots of damage. Hope it's just a few gears and easily to replace.
Thinking If I have to rip it apart, I may change the timing chain too

Re: Locked up 93 engine?
No rocker arms on this engine it is shim and bucket directly under the cams.
Sounds from your description ????; that the clutch basket has lost teeth, but from your previous post describing how it stopped initially ,I would suspect the camshaft to be damaged.
What do you mean .?

Re: Locked up 93 engine?
Ok, the clutch lever side, removed the case and turned with socket and it moved with ease. To your point, I'm thinking cam is good.
However removed the brake side, with the actual clutch - boom* teeth all chewed up. Wondering if my clutch cable isn't working properly. Thinking because I couldn't start it unless I am in neutral. My thoughts are I was actually shifting with out the clutch - thinking the clutch was working.
Gonna take me a little to see how much is actually damaged other than the one that looks like a jack-o-lantern. I'd post a photo, but it doesn't seem to want to work from my phone.

Re: Locked up 93 engine?
Right;can see where you are at with it now !
Cranks turns without resistance = cam + chain + crank O.K.
Clutch basket failure= replace basket + remove sump to clean out debris + replace oil & filter+ check other cluch components whilst stripped. strip out starter gears and check for damage.
Safety interlock system prevents engine start in gear with sidestand down unless clutch pulled in.
Clutch switch is just under lever pivot on clutch lever.
Sidestand switch is ditto to pivot on sidestand.
Problem in this system is common and easily rectified.
If you could start and stop at lights/junctions etc. and engage a gear without bike leaping forward then the clutch was working previously;the lockout system is electrical not mechanical as the actual clutch.
Probably a piece of debris from elsewhere got into clutch basket and destroyed teeth.
Usual suspect is either clutch basket finger or friction plate material.
Read up on clutch pushrod setting and clearance on this engine.
Relatively easy fix if no other components damaged;parts are very cheap and readily available for these.
Many forum members on here will sell you parts for buttons.
You need to get a Photobucket account or such and upload your pics to there then link the pic to the post using the [Img] function.
There will be how to on here somewhere;another kind reader may link it for you.(hint)
Try to get the CLYMER manual (very good for new owners) NOT the Haynes(there are very poor);cost is negligable.

Maybe post photos to be clear?
1990 FZR 1000, 1993 engine, terrible state... but improving.

Re: Locked up 93 engine?
Nice. Yes I will look through the debri, hoping it is just the basket - but having hat time finding one. I saw other years but not sure the compatibility if any.
I wish I could post a photo - I can't believe how it happened. If I can get one up I will.
If anyone knows who I can get parts for 93 fzr 600 please let me know. My search isn't finding anything except a brand new one - which I cannot go to that expense.

Re: Locked up 93 engine?
my book didnt come in yet, how do i get the starter clutch (gear off). i would think counter clockwise but not sure and i dont want to crank too hard in the wrong direction. any thoughts? the teeth are smushed rather than broken off. thinking that is odd too. it has the main bolt in the middle, main shaft i presume. then it has 3 hex bolts holding what on, im not sure. working on it now while i have some time. i just cant find what im looking for.

Re: Locked up 93 engine?
UPDATE: was able to get the starter clutch off. Everything else is working in terms of starter (without chewed up gear), cams are smooth when manually rotating. Going to replace it and hope nothing else is affected. The odd thing is, not sure what actually caused it to begin with.

Re: Locked up 93 engine?
This is why everything was jammed. Current thought is that a tooth failed and caused it. I wont know until i get it started again if it could be anything else.

Thanks again all!

Re: Locked up 93 engine?
The Clutch basket I was refering to is the major component of the actual clutch-not the starter clutch as we now see from your pics.!

Re: Locked up 93 engine?
Well I didn't have my book and wanted to start somewhere. Waiting for new starter clutch. In the meantime I figured out the reasons why it wasn't starting with clutch held in. For whatever reason the connector was not connected and tucked away under other wires - now works properly.
The kickstand switch was working, but the piece that pushes the pin in was on backwards - now fixed.
Not sure if I have a clutch problem - like I was thinking previously about maybe the clutch wasn't disengaging - possibly te root of the jam up. If I hold the clutch in and bike won't move. Only moves in neutral. Wondering if it is what was suggested or I saw in other post that if the bike sat for some time, things may have stuck together.
Will try to tackle that after I get starter clutch back in. I want to see if it starts properly.

Re: Locked up 93 engine?
All good. Clutch basket in good shape - no damage. However since it was sitting so long before, it was recommended to take the friction discs out, seperate and oil them up. So clutch it's good. I did adjust the clutch cable at the sprocket level also.
Starter clutch all fixed, now is running and riding correctly.
Thanks everyone!!
