This ^^. The #4 plug might be wet because it's not firing, not because it is too rich. Your problem has to be electircal and not mechanical. Mechanical issues don't heal, then come back, then heal. Electrical issues will do that though.

Okay, thanks guys, ill check the pipes when i get home today and let you know what i find. I have to look up some posts on how to check the float height and adjust them.

Okay, where would you suggest electrically? I sprayed the pipes today after a good hour ride, she ran well but struggled a bit in high rpm's. cylinder 1,2 dried almost instantly, 3 took just a little longer, and 4 took a while longer. Cylinder 4 was not firing before, i removed the exup housing ans could see gas in the pipe off #4. Changed the plugs and coils and 4 started to fire, got power back. Checked the exhaust again and all 4 pipes are dry and seem to be firing. I have checked all 4 coil wites for spark and they all fire, plugs are 3 weeks old, any ideas from here? Want this resolved so bad, just want to ride her without having to worry about anything. Thanks guys for all the help so far and in advance for the replys!

Did you carry out Brandon's suggestion of trimming the #4 spark lead?

No, got stuck alone with the kids. I will do it as soon as i can, probably tonight. But i have doubts because the coils, wires and boots are brand new. But i will do it just to make sure, ill let you know what happens. Thanks!

Make sure the plug cap is actually screwed into the centre of the bare wires in the lead and not just the rubber surround.

Well brother, it seems like your pretty close to figuring this out. If I recall correctly, I think Brandon suggested for someone else to trim the wire. I think they doubted him thinking it was something else, more complicated. Lol. turns out out that was the problem whole time :)

Checked all the wires, they are all making contact with the wire in the lead and are in good shape. I was playing with the idle adjustment screws. Tried a few combinations and 2 3/4 turns out seems to work well for my bike. I still need to run her for a long run and see what will happen. But she runs great right now. Are there any concerns with running her at 2 3/4 turns out on all 4 carbs?

Turning the screws IN will lean the mixture. That said, if you have them turned too far in, then yes, that could cause the motor to run excessively hot to the point where the pistons, valves, etc. will be damaged beyond repair (i.e. hole burned through the piston). However, 2 3/4 turns out is very near stock (which is 3) so you're probably safe. To check the a/f mixture on the screws, do the following:

1 - Set the idle to 1000
2 - Blip the throttle
3 - Note the following:

If the bike revs and hangs slightly the bike is lean – Back mixture screws out 1/2 turn
If revs drop below idle, or otherwise hesitate, before coming back up the bike is rich – Turn mixture screws in 1/2 turn

Once the pilot screws are in their happy place, set the idle back to 1200.

Hope that helps!

Sounds like a great test, had no idea there was a method to the idle screwadness! Ill give it a try tonight, thanks man!

Remember though that these are not idle screws. They are referred to as pilot screws (or simply mixture screws, air/fuel screws...). They are called pilot screws because they control the air/fuel mixture in the pilot circuit (aka idle circuit) of the carbs. There is only one actual idle screw which controls the opening of the entire bank of throttle plates while the throttle is not turned at all. To confuse the matter even more, these bikes have three synch screws which adjust the individual throttle plates in relation to each other.

I only mention this stuff because it helps to use proper terminology when discussing issues and the troubleshooting that comes along with dealing with them. at

Okay, so with the pilot screws set at 2 3/4 and blimping the throttle at 1000 rpm, it revs up and drops right back down to idle. So i think its set right for me. Are there any other "tests" i can do to verify proper running order. She runs good now, strong and smooth, just nervous and a tad paranoid about the whole heat damage thing now.

Sounds to me like you're good to go. Assuming you have no air leaks or anything you shouldn't worry too much about the running temperature. Just keep an eye on the temp gauge. 110 main jets are typical and I'm guessing you've done nothing else to the carbs. I don't recall you mentioning what you are running as far as air intake goes. My guess is that you have an airbox (which you should as it makes tuning a lot easier) and assuming you have no air leaks, you should be fine. Ride the bike some shorter distances for a while and just see how she behaves.

The paranoia SHOULD subside with time. lol

So, she runs great when im on the gas hard and off the line. but coming home almost 12 miles running she was jittery. Seemed to sputter at about 6500rpm but other than that was great.
