Headlights not working

Post by Rockstar »

Hey all;

I have a 1994 Yamaha FZR600 that has a set of headlights that don't function. High/low beam = no go. Bulbs are fine, both work on high and low beam. Turn signals all function fine. Brake lights function fine. Bike is running while testing & the two front turn signals act as running lights - I'm aware.

Someone suggested a poor ground but I checked all the connections, turn signals, rear brakes, bulbs (bad filaments) and they're all good. I believe a poor ground would also affect other lights, not solely the headlights? The only thing left that I can think to check is the high/low beam switch on the clutch side. I haven't taken that off yet as it looks like someone stripped the screws and I've not go replacements.

Really appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks,

Did you check the blue and white wire in the start and kill switch perch? That is a known problem and I had it once as well. My starter button was actually keeping it from engaging.

Definitely check the right grip switches. The Start button breaks the headlight circuit to ensure max amps to the ignition while the starter motor is powered.

Oh, and the left switch pod screws are 98507-05035-00, $0.99 at a Yamaha dealer; they're cheaper online, but unless you're buying a pile of other parts, you'll lose money on shipping.

Thanks for the replies! Greatly appreciated. Meant to update this earlier. The one thing I never thought to check, the turn signal assembly - hi/low beam switch had a blue wire disconnected. I spent an hour tracing wires and finally gave up, opened it up and saw the solder joint was poorly done. After a 30s do-over, back in business. Glad it was something simple!
