so what did you do when you changed the shifter, a lot may be gained in diagnosing if you tell us how you went about the change. It may just be that the alignment is off for the shift shaft to the shifter linkage. there may be alignment dots on the stock pieces if you back to stock and it works you may just have to be more careful putting the new piece back on. The distance between is important as is alignment if you don't have a Haynes manual some one here may be able to post photo's of the pages in the book to help you. mine is an 89' so I'm not sure if it would be the same.

very nice to meet you. I believe you will have to do a RIM swap. Which means a swing arm swap. One of the 1k guys or gals can speak into this further.

Early Fzr 400's are 18" also;later 3TJ models are 17" but none are suitable for a 180/55.
160 was max most could get in with 400 swinger for clearance issues.
Why do you suggest 400 parts, you must have acccess to spares from one;they are much rarer than the later FZR 1000 models.
You want the Deltabox ally swinging arm and rear wheel from a post 1989 Fzr 1000.> 1000R or 1000Ru for a plug and play easy swap over.
Other models that fit are numerous but will require spacers/machining/bearing swaps.
I have just refurbed the opposite to what you originally intended; Fzr 1000R swinger/ wheel in a SP 2TK 400 Yam that P.O fitted.
Swingers and wheel go for about £40/50 in UK but with your location ..........?
If you get a replacement s/a ;get paddock stand spool mounts fabricated and welded on before fitting;it saves loads of faff on and is far more secure than with the universal pad type.
