quick choke / idle question

my fzr has always done this, and i've always thought it odd, but never got around to asking the forum.

when i start the bike from cold w/ the choke on, it revs up to ~4,000rpm and holds there.
i saw in another thread that it is supposed to drop back down once warmed up a bit, but it never does.

is this normal?
is it necessary that it revs that high? because it's kinda loud & obnoxious.
is there a way to adjust the choke? (besides the actually choke lever)

i've gotten into the habit of starting it with full choke, then lowering the lever until it's holding around 2,500rpm.

Entirely normal behavior you are describing.

the "choke" is actually an enrichment circuit (adds fuel rather than restricting air).

and, the way you are dealing with it is exactly how you are supposed to be dealing with it. Ideally, when it revs up on it's own, you drop the revs back down by decreasing the enrichment until it will sit and idle nicely with no throttle input or enrichment.

I usually start the bike, roll it out of the garage, check tire pressures and then put on my jacket (drop enrichener some), helmet, sunglasses (drop enrichment some) gloves, throw leg over..shut off enrichement and then ride away

The choke is found only on carbureted gasoline engines. Fuel injected engines do not utilize a choke system to aid cold weather starts. Much like a choke, a fuel infection system sprays more fuel into the combustion chamber at the time of start up. This allows the engine to run much richer and aid in cold weather starts.

Try starting it with half choke ..or drop it lower as soon as it starts.

thanks guys!

yeah, reelrazor, i do the same thing.
put my boots on, walk outside, start it full choke, let it run for 10 tens or so, then drop it down about halfway and walk back inside to put the rest of my gear on. by the time i'm geared up the bike is warm.

i just wish the choke was a little more "dynamic," and self adjusting.
then again, it's 25 year old tech...
