another new guy with a question or two

Post by FZRRDRZ »

I’m new to the forum so, hello. Woke up a few days ago with no idea I was gonna own another bike but, alas… Saw a 90 FZR400 on Craigslist for cheap so I went and took it home.

The bike came out of Cali and has got EXUP headers but I’m not entirely sure what model it is. All North American FZR400’s are 1WG and that’s it for the indexing? (Sorry/ I know this has gotta be the most asked question on the forum but I couldn’t find a definitive answer anywhere.) The fairings aren’t original to this bike are they? The shape and features are right but I haven’t seen this paint work anywhere.

Also… The bike runs pretty great, outside of a trashed/ rattling EXUP valve that I’ll set to work on tomorrow, but are there any “must do” mods on these 400’s you guys would recommend? I already swapped out the calipers for some blue dots w/ some SS lines and a new MC, and it came with a FOX clicker, so?...

Much obliged.

If someone painted this it's the best work I've ever seen, but ya, it might be after market. Thanks.

It doesnt look factory because 1. someone polished the frame so the body has been off. and 2. there are none of the factory stickers. that doesnt mean 100% thats gospel truth, its just good indicators.

Am I correct in assuming this is just a “1WG” with no other numbers/ letters after it?

Yes, it's a 1WG but more importantly, it apears to be a 1990. It is the best and last year for them in the US. That year had numerous upgrades over the older ones. There is the deltabox swing arm, exup valve, 4-piston calipers, and maybe a few more that I can't think of.

Thanks.
Ya, it’s papered as a 1990 and has all the appropriate parts for that year… And the more I pick through it, the more impressed I become. In spite of the 600 I have in my shop (that I’ve never seen running) I’m new to FZR’s. I rebuilt/ dialed in the EXUP valve today and it kinda blows my mind how well this thing works-- smooth transitions through the RPMs and useable power throughout. Good work Yamaha.
