dead speedo diagnosis ??

Post by WSM »

long time no post, buddies!

last summer i put ~18,000 miles on my black beauty without a single issue!
except the speedo crapping out about 500 miles from returning home.

anyhow, i pulled out the cable. not broken, and in just spinning it in my hand i can see the gauge twitching, so i'm betting it's not the cable.
any tips on diagnosis?

i realize it is likely the wheel drive, but didn't see any details in the wiki on the topic and figured i'd just post the inquiry.

thanks y'all!

ps - anybody on here living near austin?
it's where i'm calling home now, and am LOVING the year-round riding season!

WSM,
Ok so the speedo does not work, just twitches.

If you disconnect the speedo end and raise the front wheel off the floor, spin the wheel by hand (it is possible to just roll the bike but watching where you are going and watching to see if the cable spins could prove challenging)
The cable should spin freely BUT it is also likely that the weight of the cable is engaging the drive in the wheel even if the cable has sheered with age (DO NOT ASK ME HOW I KNOW) [Y-Geo is grinning from ear to rear here ]

So pull the cable out and physically inspect it and if ok lube it and pop it back. Be sure the bottom end engages the drive, insert back into the speedo and again make sure the shaped end actually engages in the speedo .

If all the cable is well then you may have to remove the front wheel and inspect the wheel & speedo drive tags it is POSSIBLE they have either been crushed by wrong assembly or broken (more likely since you said the beast crapped out at 500 miles or so.)

Replacing the drive washer/key i have sen Y-G do with a penny washer (fender washer) with a hacksaw and a big pair of pliers.when there were none on the island.

Hello there !
My fzr600r did the exact same thing just recently.
I,ve checked the speedo clock inside which is fine.
Changed the cabble which made no diff.
It can only be the front wheel end
which I have yet to do.

Lets see who gets to fix it first.
