My Sons FZR600
Hi Need help identifiying my sons bike or parts there of. He bought an FZR 3HE off the bay H reg. After 161 miles the conrod of no1 cylinder decided it wanted to look outside and punched itself through. (Stripped engine, had a look and found that it had ben rebuilt and the nut holding the conrod together was not tightened properly). We got an engine to replace it but it is not the same. Just want details of which one it is. Scrap engine was a 3HE the replacement is a 3HH. No oil cooler and different water pump cover, I asume it's an earlier model, would I be correct in this assumption???? It's in and working so no problems on that front.

the " H reg" means nothing outside the UK. The VIN plate on the headstock should tell you year of manufacture.

The 3HE & 3HH can be checked for what model / size & year of manufacture via the Yamaha web site if my memory is actually working if the above link does not do it for you.

Okay thanks for that. And if anything is happening regarding get togethers let us know and I'll bring the boy on his bigger than mine bike.

Well I phoned Yamaha today and the young lady was more than helpful. It turns out that the replacement engine we have installed into my sons 3HE was an engine destined for the american market, so he is now happy with everything.

that is good to know, are parts available for it here in the UK if so does it carry a model name here that is different to the US marketing name?

The young lady said it was from an FZR600E, apart from having no oil cooler and a different waterpump housing, totally changeable with the 3HE, it looks exactly the same. We'll let you know if we come across anything. Oh and the oil filter is the spin on type not the paper inside a housing like the 3HE.

Okay. After rewiring and fitting the bike with the R6 regulator conversion and the bike running okay for a few days. It has decided to play up again. Since the regulator conversion my son has managed to do 220miles. Last night whilst out on a run with his mates the bike decided to die on him. He bumped started it and got home. It would not start this morning off the button so he bump started it and brought it to me. The battery was completely flat. Having charged the battery it now starts off the button. Charging checks of the battery with a meter show good charging. The generator showed good resistance before the rewiring. The regulator I have not checked as of yet cause it's now raining. So could anyone point me in the direction to go regarding why the battery would lose it's charge. Also just to add last night was the first time he was able to give it a higher speed run than when he uses it for work. Would anything be heating up and breaking down by the high speeds????? I'm riding it to work tomorrow to see if it does anything with me.

how old is the battery? if it's been run down or affected by the dodgy rectifier it could be knackered! have you tried putting it on an optimate, found that mine gave a red warning light when i tried to charge a duff battery, just an idea.

The battery is 2 months old mate. It was replaced after his old rectifier boiled his original battery. It seems he may have bought a dodgy NEW rectifier off ebay at the same time as the battery. but the bike has been fine until yesterday, after the rewire, and after he took it on a high speed run. read HIGH speed.

It also sounds like a direct short in the wireing. Ime not knocking your work but you may have missed something or you have something grounding itself out. I would use a multimeader and check your voltage on different points ( ie: lights, horn button, starter button and so on) until you find one that has a big drop in voltage also check the resistance on the starter selanoid. That's just what I'd do first though.

What is getting me is why it's not doing it all the time. I have ridden it to work and back today and it was no problem at all. Same again tomorrow, but a detour on the way home via some fast roads. Someone at work whom owned one of these years ago said something about reverse polarity caused by the generator starting to break down. Sound feasible???????????

I have a spare set in the shed from his original engine, thanks anyway. if they don't work i'll give you a shout, they should do though as his original engine ran great till the conrod wanted to look outside. I WILL BEAT THIS BIKE AND IT'S LITTLE FOIBLES. My son will start to enjoy his purchase.

NOT a "gennie"
It's an alternator...as in 'alternating current'-a three phase one to be exact. With a triad of windings on the stator being excited by a series of magnets in the flywheel.
There is NO polarity in regards to the alternator wiring.
The regulator/rectifier handles the conversion from AC to DC...look to it for trouble. Especially at the reg/rect's grounding path. This may be the source of your intermittant failure.
Tho, thinking more deeply upon it, I would suspect a general connectivity issue....poor wire connections and/or broken wire/bad terminal crimp.
Clean up every connection involved...the three phase stator output (trio of white wires)..connections at the reg/rect...reg/rect. grounding..and charge lead from reg/rect. Apply dielectric grease to the clean terminals.
See if the problem disappears.
