Battery confusion

Post by deathcomesarippin »

So I need a new battery... the old one isnt holding a charge. I went up to discount auto parts... after about 20 minutes of searching, they can get me one from another store, for about 75 big ones screwy . The walmart near me dosent have a battery for a FZR, but they have a battery for a YZF ,same engine size (600) ,and same year (95) and for only $34. Does antbody know if that will work? It looks about the same but I dont want to risk it. Could use some advice.

it;s the number on the battery you need to look at, assuming they are the same as over here!
normally something like ytx 9ah, its the 9ah that tells you the cranking power. if the numbers match it should be up to the job.
there will be variations in the letters before it depending on the manufacturer.
just make sure it isnt any bigger than the battery box!

Buy a walmart battery and you end up replacing them every couple years (at best).

The FZR battery has it's terminals in the reverse configuration than most. This is why they are priced up a bit. Get the same battery case size with the common terminal setup and reroute your battery leads (have to clip cable ties under/around the battery box).

Seems like I paid about $52 for a genuine Yuasa with terminals reversed from the FZR norm and saved myself about $20.

Whatever you do, make sure you charge it fully (low amps-long time) BEFORE using it. The very first charge pretty much determines the lifespan of the battery. Run it, and check the fluid levels after about a week0it WILL need topping up.

A good battery, with a minimum of maintenance will last for years and years.

What's wrong with the Wal-Mart battery? I'm on my 4th year with one. I expect I'll get plenty more out of it.

The reversed terminals mean that it has to be hooked up in the battery tray, but that is not a big problem. The overflow pipe will also be on the wrong side, but again that is not a big issue -- just route it similarly.

They don't carry one specifically for the FZR. They DO carry one in stock that is identical, EXCEPT the terminals are REVERSED.

My point is the reversed terminal battery WILL fit an FZR (the cables DO reach, but it is a minor pain because the battery must be fully down in the battery tray before hooking it up). It is substantially cheaper than a "proper" FZR batttery, and will last just as long.

Hey, I'm just trying to save you money...
