My restoration type project.

Post by Yamster »

Well here we go with my first, restoration is probably the wrong word,so we will say"tidy up".
This is a frame i bought a while back,so i have just sand blasted it and then sprayed with rattle can etching primer.
I bought a little compressor and a little sand blasting set up to set about this.I soon realised that a 25l 1.5hp compressor, and a cheap(£10)sand blaster off ebay were not upto the job :duh: .So off i trots and buys a bigger comp and a more expensive sand blaster.Starting to get results :headbang: ,i found that "hansons"kiln dried sand was'nt upto the job(too fine and clogs easily),but "wickes"was.Luckily from my bricklaying back ground,i knew sand can make a differance,so i did'nt throw the dummy outta the pram, and take it somewhere to be done.
I will say though, the next thing that i need doing thats larger than a swingarm, will be going to a industrial blaster to be done, cause it is quite labourious, and it works a 3HP compressor to the max :whistle .
So this is where were at now

Will be updating this thread has we go along,so i hope your not in a hurry :grinnod: .

Can't wait to see the progression. You know how much we love pics!

Sandblasting sucks.... my 2 cents. I guess if I had the right equipment it wouldn't be so bad. Nah... it still sucks. ha!

Sandblasting isn't so bad when you have the right equipment. I've sat in front of my booth for a solid 5-6 hours before and just gone to town.

For next time, Aluminum Oxide will work a lot faster than sand. Sure, it's more expensive but what is your time worth to you?

And make sure to keep the pictures coming!

Well i have got the frame sprayed, and i am resonably happy with the results, for my first attempt.

No runs on the frame and swing arm,one little run on a engine bar.Not got a total coverage with the paint on the front of the swingarm, but because it faces the frame and is out of sight,i can live with that.
Learnt quite a bit in the process of this,i went into that there paint shop and asked for some paint to match the side bar i took in,tin of thinners, hardener, lauquer as well as me paint later, were ready to rock.just expected a tin of silver paint and a tin of lauquer :headscratch: .
Gets it all to my mate's garage, for my first spraying lesson,he pulls out a £300 spraygun and says i can use that, tells me i can only have the lauquer in for 20 mins though"cause its nasty stuff"well worried me,whats wrong with my £20ebay special?
Any how to cut a short story long, should be on with building it up week after next,so will update at a later date :yutugh2:
