exhaust style, what ya people like

Post by abs929cbrrr »

been thinking about what exhaust i want...neither are cheap banghead i am leaning towards

98-01 R1 Mig high mount (try and find them since the company went outta biz in 03) :duh:
05-06/07-08 sciropion gsxr 1000 shorty...can get them brand new for $500 a pop :yikes:

i see 1 problem with shorty mufflers already is the swingarm. all the new gsxr's have a angled swingarm where the pipe would be or else it would hit. i know for sure i got room for a mig but i dunno. ive always loved mig pipes but they are a needle in a hay stack to find.

here are the 3 style i am looking at.

heres how the mig the different pipes may look...yes i konw the sprocket it on the wrong side.

TAIL GUNNER : Very expensive though.... very expensive

I am thinking of having a custom exhaust made from the vance and hines "full" exhaust system. The header section I am wanting to have them split into two and wrap up to the sides. By the way this is for my street fighter FZR.... not the full fairing FZR. That way I get ground clearance and able to use a mc jack to lift the bike without having to remove the full exhaust system.

But for the typical style exhausts, if I had the money.... I would get a tail gunner. Very unique and rare to see one around here.

The more I see them the more I like the shorty exhausts. the type where the tip is just barely sticking out of the fariing or and underbelly like a buell. But also like high mounts too. And given the fact you are using a 636 subframe the high mount would look really nice tucked right up against it.

Will all these pipes mentioned above work on a stock carbs? Like a mig high mount or a shorty can, will they need new tuning ?

If you're running the stock header and airbox, then you should have no issues.

So basically if you can match the diameter of the midpipe any pipe should work on a stock setup hmm I wish I had known that all these years lolol

Ain't you been payin' attention son? Go with the FMF, they make them in aluminum (cheaper) and silver (raw polished) titanium also. And Gold or Blue-purple like I got. Prices are great right now, not many left and they stopped manufacturing them.

CCS R6 racer tell me it's top 3 in latest horsepower reviews. What's not to like ?

Of course if you go this route TK will have to hook you up with a new mod-R6 header.

I'd even go as far as saying that as long as it's "CLOSE" to the same OD on the midpipe you'd be ok.. I have a V&H SSR slip-on from the FZR600 on my 400.. All I had to do was bring the headers into a local muffler shop and have them expand the outlet on in to accomodate the pipe. I believe the OD on the 400 is 2" or close to that and the 600 was 2.25" or something close to that.

Once he expanded my headers, the pipe slipped on there and I don't even need the retainer spring on there it's such a good snug fit. I've noticed no issues at all with the exhaust , and that section of pipe where the 2 are joined is the only spot in the exhaust where the diameter is bigger..

Just my my2cents but I believe that it would work with any pipe out there.. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though..

what does the 1st gen R6 header need to fit on the fzr? i just left a Mig high mount for R6 go on ebay this week for $79 and no bids...it was polished aluminum though... been looking at the GYTR shortys for the 06+ r6 but i dunno...they are super duper short. also checking out the yosh tri over carbonfiber slip on. my bike has a stage 1 jet kit, stock air box but i am going to go with pods i think once the tank is done. i might just keep my V7H header, but i need to paint it again!

I have to say those pipes look pretty ugly. Just my opinion, but you should get a high-mount MIG in BLACK or an IXIL if you're going to go whole-hog.
(no offense to you guys who like the shorties!)
:deal:
I don't like the shorty's at all, but even though everyone TRYING TO SELL a SCORPION says they are really good, the first few years they were out everyone said they were cheap and sucked. Go with the YOSHI if you really want quality and good looks.

TK can build you a modified R6 header like he did for me. (he cuts it where the pipes join at a couple spots and bends them to fit the FZR engine, then welds some rods between the main pipes and re-welds the bottom, so everything is solid and fits perfect)

You'll just have to trim your plastics like I did and expect him to have to make that middle piece also at the bottom of the fairings (This would assume you're using the FZR fairings, if not, probably still need some small modification / closure piece). The R6 header is wider down there. See the pictures I posted in TK's section recently. I also had to bend a couple of the fairing mounting brackets, but JUST SLIGHTLY. If you don't already have a DREMEL tool, you'll need one of those.

So far I feel about a 5 Horsepower gain over my previous Vance & Hines SS system. But part of that might be the FMF pipe also, which I still think you should consider. Maybe it really does stand for Fast Mother F****er
