Urgent help!

Post by ronny86 »

Hey guys, took my fzr to shop to get carbs cleaned and balanced, the bike is idling fine now and revs fine in neueral, soon as a put it in gear and ride it's fine up to 3k and then splutters and struggles to get to 6k now, was fine before a took it to shop, I can't hear petrol pump when I turn engine on like normal, was fine before he touched carbs, I am thinking it's petrol pump but wanted some more ideas, cheers guys

first off i'd just check that he reconnected the power connector for the pump when he put the tank back on!

if you paid a shop to do work to the bike and your not happy go back and talk to some one in charge and explain it to them just dont be mean asshole right up front about it cus any good shop will fix and goofs that they did right away so you dont smear there name

R,
easy way to test pump disconnect it from the carbs. Put a long hose on the pump outlet turn on ignition the pipe should spew gas.

FZR's are warm blooded bikes i.e. they must be nice and warm before they pull cleanly thro the revs under load ! they should be clean pulling thro the revs whilst standing tho.
My 600 will need to be run on "choke" a good 5 mins or more on a cold day before being able to pull away from a stop light cleanly.

As for not charging for carb work hmm very odd it is time consuming so............. .

As for taking it else where, time to get your brain in gear and the hands dirty it aint rocket science just plain old work.

Not charging you for the hours they put into the carbs says to me they screwed something up, they KNOW they screwed something up, and they don't know how to fix it. By not charging you for it, there is no proof (no invoice) that they ever touched the carbs, so any problems with the carbs can't possibly be their fault.

They may have damaged the pump, the main relay, or the TCI itself. Go through the the trouble-shooting pages for the pump in the electrical section of the manual.

Just so we're clear - the pump works fine when you unplug it and hook 12v directly to it, or the pump works fine when plugged into the harness, doing its prime routine and flowing fuel out the hose?

If the latter, they probably swapped one or more sets of main jets with the starter jets - they look identical, except that one is ~ #105 and the other is ~ #30...

he said alls he did was clean carbs, he said he cleaned jets and needles and one was a bit dirty rest were fine, he said carbs were a bit gunky but pritty clean, he said needles are on the setting second from top, and pilot screws are two and half turns out... just tried bike with airbox off and it runs worse...

i hate being a n00b with bikes :(

but surely if hes only touched that carbs then surely it can only be an issue with them?

Yes, yes it will.

Could be worse - you could be working on bikes for a living, and charging people money for the privilege of screwing up running bikes! :swear

Ok. First off, I'm dying to know - what is the status of your pump? Good to go, or only works when McGyvered?

Second, and unfortunately you'll need to pull your carbs for this - check to make sure the Main (#107.5) and Starter (#52.5) jets are all in the right place. It's not a hard mistake to make, but inexcusable for a shop to send it out like that.

Don,
I had a query from one of members about why I always harp on about doing JUST one carb at a time, it is just so that you have 3 carbs untouched to verify you did the assembly on the first one right. Having made sure it is you move to the second and check that against 3 others..
I have made the mistake ONCE on my own bike MANY years ago and so far I have gotten to do it for pay and everyone was still smiling at the end of it

Yup. I like to suggest doing them in pairs, or at least leave one unmolested. Some folks recommend taking pics - you can't get a better example of what an assembly is supposed to look like than an actual assembly!

Like I said - easy mistake, but inexcusable for a shop. Didn't they test-ride the damn thing?!

Don,
do Ronny good to cut his teeth on something that is not "hard" work just a matter of attention to detail. Be good to get him to swap the screws on the carbs to ALLEN head screws at the same time so he can have non damaged heads to deal with next time around.
This will give him some confidence in doing stuff for himself and learn to look after his ride. :headbang:

Heh - we're talking 'round the subject. I'm ranting at the shop, you're talking about encouraging the nice man to learn to do it on his own. Fair enough - but which of us put up the pic with which he might check his jet positions??
