The password is required to by-pass the key in case you mis place your keys.
the daft bit is the FACT that the last 4 digits of the VIN code is the password to start the bike !!!

There are instructions buried on page 48<?> of the owners manual to change this BUT how many PO's will actually do this and remember what it is ?????????? and then how many will make it 6666 or some such easy guess number like the year they were born or somesuch nonsense.

A thumb scanner would be cool.

They need to make it at least 6 digits or more.

I believe that keys will be phased out in the automobile industry in less than 10 years. Mechanical systems are easy to bypass. Trying to bypass a microcontroller will be much tougher.

RD,
you are probably correct BUT the terrible thing will be that the like of us Forum Denizens will be out of business because you will not be able to mix & match bits and bikes :-{

who knows we may be able to get bike hacker black boxes that brute force the code if it stays 4 digits ?????

The bog standard car wrench is virtually dying out as the laptop mechanic takes over, watched American Hot Rod wrestle with the ignition system on an old but relatively modern engine had to call a computer nerd to sort it !!!!

They will make Black Boxes, but they will be used to bypass the system instead of trying to hack in.

What the vehicle maker needs is modules (ignition, etc) that communicate a common sequence of codes to each other at start-up so that any foreign module will disrupt the system and not allow the vehicle to function.
