07 08 r1 tail swap

Post by rustyabiding »

Im starting my tail swap and I have the complete plastics from a 08 r1, and a yzf 600 tank. Im ordering a tail light, seats, and a undertail soon. I was wondering if anyone else has done this swap for these years? I did a search and havent found anything, from what i found was around years prior to 06. Does anyone have any pics or know anyone who has done the swap for this year? Thanks!

Thanks that really gives me insperation to do mine! Is it worth buying the subframe or do you think i could do my own mounts? Also with a subframe bolted to the original frame is it strong enough to hold two people?

Some later models have bolts holding the sub frame to the frame so it should be ok just make sure when you do it that everything is a nice tight fit and the bolts are high tensile steel going thro a tube NOT sheet metal so the load is spread.

i would have probally made my lower mount differently if i had a welder but im confident in my final result

Thanks for all the info! I think im going with getting a subframe since it looks like it has bolts that hold it to the rest of the frame (thanks yamaha george). And haro your bike looks amazing with that tail, makes me cant wait to do mine.

So I got my subframe now, along with an undertail, front seat, and pod filters. How do I decide on where to cut the old subframe and where to drill holes for the new one? Also does anyone have any measurements?
Thanks!

Nice progress there, it looks really good. One thing I notice on yours is a small gap between the top of the frame horn and the subframe. I had this same issue and had to weld about 1" of material on top to extend it up a bit into the subframe. I havent seen the 07+ subframe closely, but I know on my 06 subframe, once those horns were extended and shaped properly into the subframe, they actually became somewhat structural since they butt up against the underside and help support weight. I have every confidence in the setup to hold a passenger. But, you may want to beef up that front mount a little, it looks a bit small to me.

I also like your tank mount. Its nice and simple and looks like it will do the trick.

Thanks!
I thought about that too, i have to wait a while until i can get to a welder though. But in the meantime i have alot of other things left to do on it! I was thinking about switching to a r1 front fairing because I have all the plastics, but I kinda grown partial to the big round eyes of the fzr, so ill probably just sell all those plastics
