Custom Saddlebag Mounts - Help

Post by WSM »

So I am doing a couple long rides on the trusty ol' FZR this coming summer and am planning to attach a set of BMW saddlebags to the rear end. I've got a buddy who is an expert in such custom work (old racer/fabricator) who is going to help process, but am looking to see if anyone else on here has done anything similar/has any tips.

He is recommending an old pair or K (K100, K1100, et al.) bags which I'm in search of if you happen to know a guy, who knows a guy...

I'm also looking for a set of rear side plastics to cut up and make the bike look a little cleaner. (the plastic under the bags will have to be cut away)

Thanks, and here's to a quick winter & a warm spring!

I was going to make a mount awhile ago but never got around to it. It would lock in how the rear seat does but it would be metal and extend past the side plastics on each side and then down. Saddle bags could then be bolted to the down sections or just throw over the whole thing and tied down.

I was thinking about it because I used to have to haul a lot of stuff on the bike. Don't see why it can't work for saddle bags though.

I was designing a similar unit that would clip in in place of the rear seat, but for the long distance I'm planning this summer, I'll be fitting the bags right against the subframe of the tail.

So I've got the bags about done, but am still looking for spare plastics...
Anyone got a junk set lying around?

Hey sorry about the delay. The plastics are 80 miles from me so I'll get some pictures for you this weekend and could ship them out next week.

Hey wsm didn't you do a 2100 mile journey last year? If you come towards MO let me know. It would be fun to ride with you or show you some cool spots to camp under the stars.

Yup. Last summer's ride was kinda a test run. I'll be on the road for the full summer this year.
Missouri, eh? I'm thinking of taking Route 40 back to OH from the west coast, so it'll be later in the summer.
Thanks for the invite. I'll be doing some shout outs to the forum as my ride gets underway.
