88 FZR 1000 T-Stat

Post by cecorri »

my bike needs a thermostat, but one from Yamaha is $35.00.

Does any one know a cheap alternative ??

Will this interchange with a small car or other bikes ??

Any help will be appreciated...

I have heard rumours that it is a bog standard size and the only thing is getting the right temp for opening YMMV

If your thermostat fails and you hurt your motor, then $35 would have been cheap, right? I just bought a new one for my '87 & consider it cheap insurance. Don't forget to buy any o-rings you might need in the tear-down. I also replaced the Y-tube as it developed a pinhole, sourced one from eBay in great shape. As you may know, hoses are no-longer avail @ the dealer according to my local Yamaha shop. If you need something like that you may need to take the ones you need and try to match them to the car hoses behind the counter at your local auto parts store for heater hoses & bypass hoses, etc. My buddy also suggested going to a radiator shop where they can form hoses for you. Another possibility is straight lengths joined with sweat-fit copper elbows from the plumbing supply section and a lot of clamps. If you had some really-weird offset you might be able to use malleable copper pipe. I just do not know about the copper and anti-freeze possibly reacting, maybe something to find-out first.

I remember reading a few years ago that 86-89 Honda accord t stat will work. I could wrong on that but that at least gives a start point for cross referencing.

I would just bring it down to a local auto parts store like Napa or something and see if they have anything that will interchange but like Duane said I remember someone doing that too. A quick search in the search bar may turn up something...
