Shift forks

This has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find it. I've got a 1WG. Can you get at the shift forks in the transmission without splitting the cases? This is where I suspect my problems are coming from and I really don't want to pull the motor if it's not necessary. The manual, of course, shows the engine out of the frame. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

I believe you can access the fork rods and forks by pulling the oil pan, clutch cover, and clutch. The bike needs to be on its left, but accessible - the shift shaft has to come out on the left side. The drive and counter shaft cannot be pulled without splitting the cases, and I'm not sure about the shift drum (but you CAN do a fairly good inspection).

Thanks for the feedback, Don. That's exactly what I was looking for. As a side note, I read some of your MegaSquirt stuff a while back with interest. My brother has a first generation Mazda RX-7 that he runs with MS. I've been giving serious thought to converting one of my bikes. At the moment it's a butt-ugly Suzuki 7/11. I thought the major problem was going to be handling the 10,500 rpm redline. That's nothing compared to the gazillion rpm you're dealing with. Thanks again.

That is fantastic information and MUCH more user-firendly than the manual (Step 1 - remove engine from motorcycle; Step 2 - Disassemble top end; Step 3 - split cases; Step 4 - comtemplate suicide). Thank you very much for the link.
