'97 Chain/Sprocket Question
Hi, I'm working on a '97 model that I recently bought. Everything is completely off the bike and getting ready for paint. I have a question regarding chain and sprocket. The previous owner just replaced the chain and not the sprocket. I noticed that the rear sprocket is badly worn and had the tip of several broken. I am going to replace the sprocket(s) and wanting to know what my options are w/o buying a new chain (on a budget). The current sprocket front(15T) rear(45T). Is the stock chain a 520 or 530? I found a used set 530 front(14) rear(48T). Please advise what you would do.
thanks

Re: '97 Chain/Sprocket Question
What would I do? I'd buy a set of sprockets and a chain complete. You may be saving money for the immediate future but that old chain will more than likely prematurely wear out the new sprocket. It's always a better idea to replace everything as a set.phudeb wrote:Hi, I'm working on a '97 model that I recently bought. Everything is completely off the bike and getting ready for paint. Re: '97 Chain/Sprocket Question
I would make sure that they chain and sprockets were original to the bike. Those sprockets were made of steel and would take some serious neglect to get to that point.
Take and post a picture if you can.

Re: '97 Chain/Sprocket Question
The PO said that the chain is a week old. The old chain broke and you can see where it cut into the side of the sprocket and broke the chain cover. I gues he just changed out the chain to get it running since he was selling the bike. I will try to take some pics soon.

Re: '97 Chain/Sprocket Question
if thats the case i wouldnt worry about wear and just replace the sprokets and leave the chain be. unless its difficult to find sprokets by themselves i have always done them together but in your situaltion things are different. hey they sell some good stuff on ebay as far as chains and sprockets go, even some acceleration kits too
Re: '97 Chain/Sprocket Question

If I go with (-1) front and (+3) rear sprocket, will I need a longer chain? I don't know the calculation.

Re: '97 Chain/Sprocket Question
If you have a 530 chain (assuming the sprockets are stock) and only want to replace the sprockets, I believe I still have my stock ones in a box (I did the 520 conversion on my 600). Let me know if you want them and I'll check if they're still there. They're 15 and 45.phudeb wrote:I'm in TN, US

Also, the final drive ratio calculation is simply rear / front. So stock (15/45) would net you a 3.00 final drive. Darrin has a great thread going regarding chains (including drive ratio / top speed numbers) here:

*EDIT* I just saw Tony's offer. If shipping from the U.K. is too much for you, my offer still stands.

Stock is 530 front(15T) rear(45T)
Typical replacement is 520
anything else is a waste of time & more importantly money if you are on a tight budget
Re: '97 Chain/Sprocket Question
I know if you go (-1) and (+2) you don't need to alter chain length (if you have stock 15 / 45 gearing). (+3) in the rear might mean you will need a longer chain. It all depends on what was on the bike (gearing) to begin with.phudeb wrote:I'm in TN, US

Re: '97 Chain/Sprocket Question
Thank you all for the responses.
Thank you Brandon for the offer. I just bought new sprockets. We'll see if they will work with my existing chain length, if not, I will take you up on your offer.

a trifle harsh but I must agree that having a location in the profile
A} tells me what the bike is likely to be
ie the only 400 stateside was 1WG where as the rest of the world had all.sorts
B} if they are asking about parts I can suggest some where local
Unfortunately as Director I cannot be so cut & dried about it BUT I do get EXTREMELY pis*ed & fed up typing in the requests for a location .................................
