Mission: to Resurrect it

Post by ruffryderMel »

Well I've been around lurking for some time, i came over from the Archives. I had another bike (sv650) so I forgot about my fzr600 when it started acting up. I let it sit for about 2 years (with brand new tires mind you) after I broke a spark plug in the 1 cylinder. Now is time to resurrect it. I got the parts for the ford escort mod. Since I am going to take the head off, I was thinking about doing the 660 conversion. I am talking to Mr. Freeze about the yzf600 swing arm mod. I am also thinking of going to thatKid for his r6 header mod. Throw me some ideas because, I plan to do it up. I will document everything here.

Would be cool to get a different front end. I think thatkid is selling some R1 forks.

Id recommend the 08 R6 shock swap at the same time as the swingarm swap. And a fork swap is a great mod too! I can help you out with the fork swap as well as the swingarm if you want. Ive got some ideas for the fork swap that I want to try out anyway that should make it cheaper and easier.

If you are thinking 660 mod, I have a chunk of what you will need for that. Would love it to go to a good home. R6 headers are cheap too in comparison to other aftermarket mods. I think I can powdercoat them now as well. I need to check sizing.

The YZF swingarm is a good choice for a wider wheel and tire combo and relatively inexpensive to do. The R6 rear shock makes a world of difference too.

If freeze's front end ideas don't work out I have a few ideas myself. Although I sold my R1 front end otherwise I'd offer it up. Depending on your weight though, the R6 front end may be a better fit. I'm a light guy and I always found the R1 a bit stiff.

Brembo master cylinders are a fantastic upgrade. Radial or regular. They make a huge difference in brake feel. Stainless lines are a plus as well. There is a ton you can do if you just use your imagination and your pocket book is endless. :)

I didn't say endless pocketbook :whistle LOL, but I do want something good. For the forks I got some inverted ones I bought from modkingfzr600 I never put on it from like 2 years ago (I know, I know, I am bad but at least I have them fresh for now).

1. mrfreeze5 do I need to do anything extra to the swing arm mod to run the r6 shock?
2. ThatKid, for the 660 mod, you have what parts or rather, what parts do I need to finish it after I buy yours?

3. General question about the tires, I have brand new tires on the thing (new 2 years ago). I might have put 5 miles on them around the block, moving the bike just to make sure it ran. The back is a dunlop, the front is a Michelin 2ct., do I have to change them?

Yes, there is more, but its pretty simple. The R6 shock has a different size upper bolt, so small bushings are needed to make up the difference. Or drilling out the stock bushing might work too. You also need shorter dogbones.

And yes, you will need new tires. The FZR rear wheel is 18", yzf is 17". FZR uses a 110 front, the inverted forks probably use a 120/70

Check the tires for dry rot and flat spots. If the bike has been sitting on those tires for 2 years you will probably have flat spots and will likely want to change them.

For the 660 mod, you'd need pistons and conrods I believe. I have freshly honed head, valves, spacer plate and carbs.
