USD fork help

when I turn the r1 forks upside down, it sounds like theres liquid traveling threw them like a rain stick

should it be like that?
is there not enough liquid in it?

Anytime you turn something upside down that has a liquid....what comes up must come down. Its very simple physics.

The fork tubes are not full to the top. Read the manual it will tell you how much fluid is suppose to be in them. All bikes are different but I have never dealt with any that were so full you couldnt hear the swish.

Yeah you can't completely fill forks with oil or they won't compress.

it just seems like there is TOO little oil in there...
its not just a swish...
when I turn it upside down it and hold it there, i can hear it run threw the forks and it goes for like 5 seconds...
now count out five seconds in your head...its pretty long

I would think when I turn it over I would just here a little swish as if you flipped a un opened water bottle...but thats not the case...

and I dont have a manual for r1 forks...

Well its probably best that you replace the fork oil anyway. I guess its time you track down online r1 manual maybe or search an r1 forum.

You said in another thread that there is a possibility that the tire that came with your front end is dry rotted. So it's quite possible that the fork seals (which are also rubber) have also dry rotted as well and the fork oil has leaked out. That could be why you hear what you hear. If it were me, I'd be redoing the seals and checking the bearings on that front end to make sure they are good. Understandably, the R1-Forums doesn't have the friendliest people but doing a search there on regarding fork seal replacement might help and you won't even have to ask the question. As I have suggested before, you should look into getting a manual for your bike and now the bike that front end came from as you aren't always going to be able to just get the answer by going to a forum.

yes, I am going to get new seals...
the ones on there have a small like 1 millimeter tear at the end...

what do you mean about bearings?
the ones for the wheel??

As I have suggested before, you should look into getting a manual for your bike and now the bike that front end came from as you aren't always going to be able to just get the answer by going to a forum.

Hi,
any one who mods a bike is NUTs if they do not keep a notebook (preferably alphabet indexed type ) to keep track of all the no original bits they have used from bolts to rims etc.

For your own sanity later on when servicing the bike having the info to hand is a must.

When I sell my project bikes the new owner would be clueless (usually more clueless than usual) as to what they are seeing. So they get a copy of my note book with make year model part number (universal numbers as well if known) ,

why a copy well what I like I tend to repeat and what makes you think I trust the new owner to keep the book safe that way if it goes pearshaped I can tell them what they have not looked after

For those of you with "special" bits of bike from some other brand or year & have the manual (or parts of the manual that cover the bits in question, how about adding the info to the WIKI {95, if you can post the info to me via PM, I can arrange to host scanned pages with relevent bits in)

That way it will help others to decide what to buy for them selves and promote knowledge of the part for GOTCHA's like the special tool for dis-assembling USD tools which are super expensive but VERY cheap to make as I found out with my Ducati 996 shocks for my RD "yellow Peril". Ducati shocks are too short for FZR's :-{ I have spare set so I know for sure

Good stuff george. In my case, everything I have modded or swapped is from the same year bike. Makes it easier for me to remember and also if I sell it. That is a great idea though to list every detail to pass along.

95, a lot of guys will tell you a modded bike is hard to sell if the customer knows his bike model, the customer sees it as "butchering" or in my case overkill (USD all adjustables on a 80's bike two stroke no less) most guys are thinking to buy to bring back their YOOF and wear rose tint glasses as happy memories . Truth is they were fast but crap handling , I got rid of that BUT the customer does not know that which is why the book of part changed and the test ride !
I never actually get my money back in terms of thought & labour, material yup I get that

Also when I buy back some ten years twenty year later the book serves as my re-furb guide and on my long term own bikes that I ride maybe every two years it is good to know when last the oil was changed LoL.

I hear ya. I could never get back what I put into my fizzer but it will keep me riding for many years to come. Your right, at least I know when the oil was changed last.
