Bringing the 1k Back to life

Post by sweekster »

I guess this is my rebuild thread for my 94 Fzr 1000. I don't plan on getting wild with this. It's more of a resto-mod type of thing. I bought this bike a few weeks back going on the word that it "should" run. It had no key and no seat but all the body work. Since my 600 has been sold and is in good hands I can focus on getting my 1k going.

I removed all the decals. I've had a key made for it. I then tried jump starting it from my Jeep and it almost fired up. Cranked really strong and seems to have good compression (I will check that this coming weekend). I was also told the carbs were gummed up and would not open. Decided to pull them off and check them out. Turns out that the butterfly in one of the cards seized up. I've got another set of carbs coming soon so I figured lets dissect these a little more. So I separated the seized one and took it apart. Looked pretty clean inside. Noticed the needle had 6 setting options. The bike came with pods too so this leads me to believe there's a DynoJet Stage 3 Kit in them.

Anyway on to the pics....

Time for an update guys. Been collecting parts and doing research so I could get the bike to at least start up. Got home last night and spent a few hours cleaning up and rebuilding an extra set of carbs I had. Installed a Factory Pro stage 1 kit. Replaced the ignition coils. New champion spark plugs. New battery. Fresh oil and filter. After all that and some coaxing and praying.....IT FIRED UP :headbang:    :bunny :banjoman ClapHands RRBike . Started staring at the pipe to see if there was any blue smoke...None. Only thing I noticed was a slight valve tick. I planned on doing the valves so I wasn't too surprised. But it was running and that was a major hurdle passed. I also scored a beat up Corbin seat, which I recovered (although it looks like crap).

Click Here for the vid of it running

So what's next?
New Petcock
Chain and Sprockets
Bleed out the brakes and clutch with fresh fluid
Fork Seals
Replace the current and incorrect exhaust with an EXUP header and slip on pipe
Then after all that pull the motor and do the valves.
While the motor is out cleanup the frame

The seat when I got it:

Nope, not yet. Once i get the petcock issue fixed with the tank I'll take up the street. Getting it to start up was the goal for this weekend and I got it done earlier than i thought. I still can't believe it's running. It also fires right up, even after sitting for a bit- no hesitation or anything.

That's just what I did. Ran my temp line from a external tank to the fuel pump and filled up the carbs enough to get it up to the corner and back. Felt good to actually ride it even if it was for pretty much a minute. To think, I bought this bike without a key just over a month ago and not sure if it was running and I ended up (so far) riding it up the street today. Talk about being stoked!! :bunny  :bunny   :headbang:
