Custom seat foam and tips

Post by megaloxana »

I dont like the way my seat fits in conjunction with my airtech tail and yzf tank so I'm gonna attempt to make one from scratch.I was gonna make the pan out of fiberglass and then cover it in foam and vinyl.
Any give advice on what kind of foam to use?

Any other tips and tricks will be welcome as well.

Thanks! :D

Go to a mattress manufacturer (there's usually something like that locally everywhere).. You want high density foam. I've got some 4" thick stuff that I re-lined my seat with.. I went to a local fabric shop initially, but their definition of high density foam was, well, lacking...

As for the vinyl, I picked up some Marine vinyl.. usually comes in all kinds of colors.. That's pretty much exactly what my stock seat had on there to begin with...

It's really not hard to put on either.. I used an air stapler with some short staples (afterall, you don't wanna sit on your seat and get pricked in the ass)...

I got some pics of the finished product if you wanna see em.

These are the only pics I have taken thus far.. It's the finished product.. I'll take some more tomorrow of the foam that I used, and the vinyl material that I used as well.. The main thing is that you take off the existing seat covering by pulling all the staples from the underside. After that, just trace an outline of the old material onto the back of the new one so you can cut it out. I went a little bigger because I was using thicker foam than was on originally.

For the passenger seat, I didn't change the foam since I'm not carrying passengers anyways so I don't care how it feels :) ...

I don't know what your seat's going to look like under the vinyl, but there's 2 different foam pieces on mine. The top one is more of a cushion to the bottom one which is a very hard material. Now, what I did there, is using a razor blade I sliced the softer upper layer off, and then made a new one out of the foam that I bought. On mine, it's a little thicker than stock, but that's ok, that's what I wanted.

Anyways here are the pics of the finished product:

Thanks again for the info, would love to see pics of the foam and stuff. So you kept the original hard foam layer and replaced the softer top foam, correct?

Yep. Thought it would be too much of a pain to pull off the harder layer and sculpt something to fit correctly.. You'll see when you pull off the old vinyl what I was talking about (if it's the same)..
