I have a Semi Big Problem Can you help???
I bought my 96 Fzr 600 from a kid who had droped it and said that the Peanut cover had been cracked and leak a small amount of Oil. And since I could get a visual on the crack I took him on his word that was the only problem with the bike. Well I worked a deal with a guy on here to get a new peanut cover and I took my old one off today and found a much much larger problem. The lowest mounting point towards the dash side of the bike the mounting ear is snapped off on the case its self. The cover is fine its the mounting ear on the bike, I couldnt see this when I was getting the bike or I would have moved on but now the problem is mine. My question is this what are my options and what can I do to fix this I called a few Yamaha Dealerships for some answers and 3 out of 4 acted like they have never heard of the FZR at all and had no help to give. The last guy I talked to was very nice and suggested that I could take it to a Machine shop to have it cast welded. Or suggested that I try Yahma Bond 4 because it dries semi hard not rubber like RTV does any one have any experince with the stuff? And what suggestions can you guys give me on this? I am very much in need so let me know what you think!
As always thanks for your help

My advice isn't going to amount to much however :
A. Seek non judicial restitution from the kid Soprano Style , then have a beer.
B. Call the closest community college and have the shop instructor give you some advice, perhaps they could fix it as a
project.
C. Prayer and lots of JB weld.
D. Post comments of your frustration on the kids myspace profile.
I don't know man, but seeing you weren't getting too many responses I thought I would throw in my two cents.
And thats all I have to say about that.

Can you take a pic and post it?
I don't believe that it's that critical of an area that JB Weld couldn't fix it. However; if you have the cash and the resource, I would take it to someone who can weld aluminum and fix it for you.

I thought about option A real hard for a minute but then I thought to myself this is what you get for taking his word which is some thing I normaly never do! And as far as B goes this is my only mode to get around right know and I cant be with out it for the moment. As far as JB weld I thought of that but the whole idea of plastering the Cover to the side of the engine kinda bothers me a tad to be honest. What if I ever need to take the Peanut cover loose I mean I guess I could seperate it with a scraper or some thing.ShogunTX wrote:My advice isn't going to amount to much however :

Uh....no. Just JB WELD the spot where it was broke off. Drill and tap the JB Weld or whatever you need to do with it.dans96fzr600 wrote: As far as JB weld I thought of that but the whole idea of plastering the Cover to the side of the engine kinda bothers me a tad to be honest. Oh dont get me wrong I was not going to do that as not only would it be a terrible idea it would look horrid as well. I am trying the idea of sorta sclupting a new bolt ear then tapping it kinda like you said I will let you know how that goes.ragedigital wrote:Uh....no. Just JB WELD the spot where it was broke off. Re: I have a Semi Big Problem Can you help???
So I have been building up sorta a hill of JB weld where the bolt ear is supposed to be. And today I have finaly got it to the right height so when it sets up I will be doing some filing to get it formed the right way. I went and got a gasket to use for a out line so I can form it the right way. Once that is done I will drill and tap it and let you guys know how it went.

Re: I have a Semi Big Problem Can you help???
This is weird, because I had the EXACT same problem with my new motor.....
Do NOT JB weld the piece back on, I originally had done that, then later I started thinking, and I noticed that if the piece was to fall off when i'm riding......i'm screwed! Then what are you going to do?
The engine case is cast aluminum, you need to get it welded, do the smart thing, thats what I did, it could only get welded on one side but that is more than enough, I used some JB weld to put over top of the weld just to make sure no oil leaking would occur.
Cost me 40 bucks to get done, but in reality I would rather pay that than loose the broken piece in the middle of the highway never to find it again!
good luck

Re: I have a Semi Big Problem Can you help???
The problem with this is I bought the bike with this ear busted off and I dont have the piece to have welded back on. So I am forming my own ear with the JB weld I think it will work good the stuff formed rock hard and is taking for ever just to file one side. So I dont think the piece will just fall off during a ride, but I will be taking the bike to a Machine shop over the winter to have a piece made and welded back in the correct way. But for now the bike is my only way to work and back and I cant be with out it so this is the only choice I have.billy_awesome wrote:This is weird, because I had the EXACT same problem with my new motor.....
