^+1 on that. Do these easy jobs yourself. After all, if they're breaking things you're hardly likely to do ny worse yourself.
A Haynes/Clymer manual will pay for itself many times over fisrt time you open it.

Problem with doing the "small stuff" on his own may be because when he has to bring it in for the scheduled maintenance, and they see some stuff done to the bike, then it might void his warranty..
I know with my 05 Tundra, I couldn't even do my own oil change or it would void the warranty. I had to call them before I did ANYTHING to it just to make sure.. I dunno, just what I think though..
But I'd try to find a different dealership to bring it to, if those guys are asshats..

It's different here in the UK. Provided you use parts of equal or greater quality than the standard ones(ie, just use standard parts and you're fine) and whoever does the work is a 'competent engineer' then anyone, even the owner, can do the work and maintain the warranty. There was a big court case around 2000 where a car owner successfully sued Skoda in this regard, and the case law has now been written into the UK block exemption regulations.

Back home as a dealer for yamaha we were only allowed to charge for oil everything else was covered by Yamaha.Yes we did revoke warranty if the bike went out side of its check up period. As to wether the owner changed tyres/ chain/fenders /paint job that was their problem not ours.

check out the magnussun(sp?) moss warranty act. Normally I do the small stuff myself. I took it in to them because it's brand new and I didn't want to be doing repair work on a brand new bike. Honda's warranty is not voided if you perform your own maintenance/repairs; I asked about that specifically before I bought the bike. Oddly, the service manager is about the only person there that doesn't give me the impression that they're trying to screw me the moment I walk in the door. Doesn't matter though, as far as I'm concerned I'm done doing business with that dealership, once I get my plate and my refund check for the slider install. They actually did a decent job of handling my latest round of crap, but it's still too little too late.
