quick petcock Q

Post by pkhype »

so i took my tank off too clean out the carbs.. Which must of needed it pretty bad cause I never had this much power b4. But while taking out the tank I wan a retard and didnt remove the petcock first so I ended up rippin it off. Its stuck in the on position right now so I csn still ride-- but is it bad to keep it in the on position? Also.. I found and extra line which looks to be a reserve line because it has a filter on it, but I cant find where it plugs to. I know it goes from the epetcock-- but where to after that??? This must be why I ran out of gas on the interstate, I was like "no big deal ill just switch to reserve" ya right! Still no go. Thanks for your help guys!

If it sits for a long period of time I would switch it to off. I have not had mine in the off position since I have owned it but then again, it gets ridden every week.

Here's the parts fiche for you to look up where the line goes. Let us know how it turns out.

There's only one gas line. The reserve is just a shorter straw in the tank. The only hose from the petcock goes into the pump then there's one going into the carbs. If the hose you're talking about has black cylinder in the middle, it's the condensation drain for the airbox. That thing is a check valve so you don't suck anything up through the drain.

When you say you broke the valve, I assume you mean the black plastic knob. They're hard to come by on their own because so many people break them. It's $12 on BikeBandit.

You might want to get the whole petcock assembly if your bike is old like mine, the o-rings in the assembly go bad over time, especially when you smash them like you just did. It will leak (slow or fast, varies) right there easily. I might be wrong but I think the whole thing is around $37. Probably well worth it.

Mine has been ON for over 12 years now, never a problem.

...do us a favor and put at least the model and year of your bike in your signature. post up a picture in for your avatar if you can. if it's a pain just post a full size pic in the Gallery under your name (create a folder, Rage has instructions for that around here somewhere) If you don't have an "avatar sizer program" i can do it for you and post it back.
